New leaks have now revealed more information on Apple's upcoming foldable phone. This device will debut later this year as the latest entry in Apple's most premium "Ultra" tier of products and could do so with a hefty price tag, perhaps nearing the $3,000 mark when kitted out.

Apple is expected to launch its first foldable smartphone later this year. This device, potentially branded as the iPhone Ultra, will rival devices like the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Oppo Find N6, but could do so while carrying a heavy price tag.

As revealed by Mark Gurman, Apple's inaugural foldable slots right into the company's "Ultra" range of products, next to offerings like the Apple Watch Ultra, CarPlay Ultra, and the M-series Ultra chipsets. Consequently, the foldable could directly be branded as the iPhone Ultra, or more literally as the iPhone Fold.

The iPhone Ultra, regardless of whether it debuts with that nameplate, is tipped to be a pricey affair, with a starting price tag in the region of $2,000. That should come as no surprise: after all, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 starts at $1,999 in the US.

According to a Chinese source, however, the Apple foldable is expected to cost over CNY 20,000 when specced out. That figure converts to around $2,900 and would be noticeably more expensive than an equivalent Galaxy Z Fold7. The Samsung foldable, when equipped with 1 TB of storage, is priced at CNY 17,499 in China, or about ~$2,550.
