Apple is not having a good first quarter in 2023, according to a new report. IDC claims to have found that the Cupertino giant has seen a propitious decline in the sale of its Macs and MacBooks compared to those of 1Q2022.
In fairness, all other brands ahead of Apple in IDC's PC market rankings - Lenovo, HP and Dell - have seen similar negative growth, at -30.3%, -24.2% and -31% respectively - however, Apple's shipments are reportedly down to 4.1 million in the latest figures, or -40.5% YoY.
That performance has contributed to a PC shipment total of 56.9 million - less than that of even 1Q2019 (at 59.9 million) and -29% YoY - for 1Q2023. Appl has also lost market share in the quarter, standing at 7.2% worldwide compared to 8.6% in 1Q2022.
Nevertheless, there is a silver lining to this loss of business, according to IDC, which is that the patently reduced demand will give supply chains a chance to recover, adapt and come back even stronger for the next wave of growth, projected to rise in 2024 as the pressure to upgrade takes hold.
