Anbernic has been uncharacteristically quiet lately after an exceptionally busy 2024. To recap, the company introduced a new gaming handheld monthly last year, culminating in December's launch of the RG34XX (curr. $84.99 on Amazon). While there have been rumours of an RG34XX SP since then, Anbernic has only refreshed the RG34XX with a fifth colour option.
However, there is an increasing amount of evidence that the company is working to deliver a successor of sorts to the RG556, which debuted in February 2024. Seemingly, a company associated with Anbernic showcased an early prototype during CES 2025 in January, evidence of which we have embedded below courtesy of Silicon Den.
It is currently unclear what name Anbernic plans to assign to this device. The company's naming scheme suggests that 'RG557' is likely, given its 5.5-inch display. Reportedly, this panel runs at 1080p with a 60 Hz refresh rate in a 16:9 aspect ratio, just like the RG556. It remains to be seen whether OLED panel technology will return for the so-called RG557, though.
Anbernic may also swap the Unisoc Tiger T820 in the RG556 for the Snapdragon G2 Gen 1, which Qualcomm unveiled in 2023 alongside the Snapdragon G1 Gen 1 and the Snapdragon G3x Gen 2. If the above image is accurate, then the Snapdragon G2 Gen 1 will be complemented by 8 GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 33 W fast charging in a 255 x 114 x 32 mm shell. Unfortunately, other details remain unknown for now.
