An affordable 12-inch all-rounder with a stylus & fast charging - Lenovo Idea Tab Plus tablet review

A smart choice for smart minds.

The Lenovo IdeaTab Plus makes it a pretty easy decision for buyers. For under $290, you get a lightweight and well-equipped 12.1-inch tablet that comes with a stylus. It's primarily intended as a companion for university lectures. However, the IdeaTab Plus is just as well-suited for surfing or streaming, as our review demonstrates.

Verdict - Lenovo Idea Tab Plus

The Lenovo IdeaTab Plus offers good value for money, making it a worthwhile recommendation not only for students seeking an affordable tablet with a stylus.

For around $290, you get a 12.1-inch Android tablet with a sturdy and high-quality metal case, 256 GB of storage, and microSD support up to 2 TB. It also features a bright and color-accurate 90 Hz IPS display, good speakers, and long battery life. The tablet can also be charged quickly at up to 45 watts.

With the Dimensity 6400, the IdeaTab Plus isn't an especially fast processor, but it does deliver solid performance. However, this doesn't make the 12.1-inch device really suitable for gaming.

It's also a shame that Lenovo doesn't offer a cellular version of the tablet in this country, leaving Wi-Fi 5 as the only option for internet access. The update period is also short compared to the competition.

Pros

+ stylus included
+ lightweight and high-quality aluminum case
+ microSD slot for cards up to 2 TB
+ precise GPS
+ IPS display lacks PWM
+ charging at up to 45 watts
+ long battery life
+ good speakers

Cons

- updates only for 4 years
- only WiFi 5
- no fingerprint sensor
- average performance
- no mobile network variant in sight

Price and availability

On Lenovo's online store, the Idea Tab Plus comes with a stylus and costs $289. At the time of reviewing, the tablet was available elsewhere, but for not much less.

Case - The Lenovo Idea Tab Plus has a matte metal case

The Lenovo IdeaTab Plus is housed inside a sturdy aluminum case, feels high-quality to the touch, and at 530 grams, is relatively light for a 12-inch tablet. It's ideally suited for use in dry environments, since its IP52 certification only offers limited protection against dust and can only withstand a few drops of water at best before requiring repair.

At around 7 millimeters on all sides, the display bezels are quite thin and lend the tablet a modern look. The selfie camera is installed inside the frame to save space, while the main camera sits beneath a glass cover, protruding slightly from the otherwise approximately 6.5 millimeter-thin back cover, which increases the maximum height to around 8.5 millimeters.

Software - Many AI tools, but updates only up to Android 17

Lenovo has still equipped its tablet with Android 15, which, at the time of this review in mid-October, was running the August 2025 security patches. The IdeaTab Plus is expected to receive two OS upgrades up to Android 17 and four years of security patches until 2029.

Lenovo has well-optimized its ZUI user interface for its tablet. Among other things, it can display multiple apps simultaneously in separate windows and a taskbar, making it easier to launch frequently used apps. It also includes AI tools such as Circle to Search, Google Gemini, and the company's own AI Note app, which can complete and summarize text.

Sustainability

The EU EPREL label has awarded the Lenovo tablet the top repairability rating of "A." The IdeaTab Plus's packaging is devoid of any plastic wrapping and made of recycled cardboard.

Lenovo hasn't disclosed its tablets' carbon footprint or the recycled materials used. The manufacturer offers repair instructions for its products on its website.

Communication and GNSS - The Idea Tab Plus has WiFi 5 and good GPS

With Wi-Fi 5, the IdeaTab Plus relies on a relatively slow Wi-Fi standard.

Connected to our Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000, reference router, data transfer speeds are stable, but at a maximum of 327 Mbps, they lag behind many competitors.

Cameras - 13 MP + 8 MP for snapshots

Selfie camera image
Selfie camera image

The IdeaTab Plus features a 13 MP main camera with autofocus. The selfie camera has an 8 MP resolution, uses fixed focus, and is located in the display bezel.

Neither of them takes particularly good photos, but at least the main camera is quite versatile. This means it's suitable for scanning documents or text and takes usable snapshots in good lighting conditions. However, it doesn't capture some blue and green tones particularly accurately.

Accessories and warranty - Stylus included

Lenovo currently always sells the IdeaTab Plus in a bundle with a stylus (RRP $289). The bundle with the pen and folio cover is only slightly more expensive at around $328. In the EU, both bundles come with a 24-month warranty.

Alternatively, the better Lenovo Tab Pen Plus stylus is currently available on Amazon for around $49.

Our review device came with the stylus, a USB-C cable, a SIM tool, and a quick start guide.

Input devices and operation - The Lenovo tablet comes without a fingerprint sensor

The IdeaTab Plus impressed us with its responsive touchscreen that quickly translated inputs from finger and pen. Thanks to its 90 Hz display, the ZUI 17 also runs smoothly. Due to the lack of a fingerprint sensor, 2D facial recognition via the selfie camera remains the only biometric authentication option.

Unlike the Plus version, the pressure-sensitive stylus uses a AAAA battery instead of a rechargeable battery, but it also supports 4,096 levels of pressure and tilt. The pen doesn't feel particularly high-quality, but it still ensures precise writing. Although it lags slightly during fast movements, Lenovo hasn't provided any information regarding its latency.

Display - A bright IPS display without PWM

Subpixels
Subpixels

The IPS display is said to achieve a typical brightness of 600 nits. The 2.5K screen manages this as promised with a pure white background, increasing slightly to 762 cd/m² for smaller image sections (APL18). The IdeaTab Plus is easy to use outdoors as long as you avoid direct sunlight.

The IPS screen also performs almost consistently well in terms of image display, with the added advantage of not requiring pulse-width modulation to adjust its brightness. This makes the tablet well-suited for users sensitive to PWM.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.
Screen flickering / PWM not detected

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 8190 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured.

Display Response Times

Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.

Performance - The Idea Tab Plus houses a MediaTek Dimensity 6400

Das Idea Tab Plus has opted to use MediaTek Dimensity 6400, which, in terms of performance, falls into the lower mid-range category.

The Lenovo tablet features an ARM processor and its integrated Mali G57 MC2 ARM GPU, and it provides smooth operation for standard applications such as studying, streaming, and surfing the internet. Games, on the other hand, are only enjoyable at medium to low detail levels, with anything else resulting in stuttering performance.

The IdeaTab Plus's performance comparison with the competition is unflattering. Aside from the Teclast Art Pad Pro, which is also not a computing marvel, many other similarly priced tablets offer significantly better performance.

Emissions - A cool Lenovo tablet with good sound

Temperature

The Lenovo tablet remained very unfazed, no matter which CPU and GPU test loads we subjected it to. Even after a one-hour stress test with the Burnout benchmark, the IdeaTab Plus didn't even get warm to the touch. Under full load, there was almost no performance loss, as the 3DMark stress tests demonstrate.

Speakers

Lenovo's 12.1-inch tablet features four speakers that support Dolby Atmos and produce sound up to 84 dB(A). The sound is excellent, if a bit high-pitched, and even lower frequencies can also be heard.

External audio devices can be connected via USB-C and Bluetooth. Many important Bluetooth codecs are supported, including SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, LDAC, LC3, and Opus.

Battery runtimes - 45-watt charging

Power consumption

When it comes to charging, patience is often the key with inexpensive tablets. Not so with the IdeaTab Plus, since its 10,200 mAh battery can be charged at up to 45 watts. This meant a full charge cycle only took 1 hour and 21 minutes in our test (Anker 317 charger, 100 watts).
