Energy completely independent of the power outlet: The SolarBrick is a modular solar system that intends to enable make the charging of various devices such as smartphones or tablets unproblematic while off-grid or on the go.

Amazon offers a wide selection of different compact solar devices that can be used to charge a smartphone while camping or hiking, even at relatively affordable prices. Such systems are often foldable. The SolarBrick, now in its third generation, takes a different approach. Specifically, it is a modular system in which the individual solar modules attach to each other and are held in place by strong magnets. This allows the surface area to be adjusted accordingly, but the output also depends directly on the modules used. With one panel, only 2.5 watts is possible, with a maximum of around 20 watts overall. As usual, this figure is to be understood as the maximum in full sunlight and without shade.

The individual modules measure 128 x 128 millimeters and are only 2.8 millimeters thick, with each module weighing around 75 grams. The required controller is somewhat thicker and weighs 30 grams. Devices can be charged via USB-C and USB-A, but even the maximum power output is usually not enough to charge a notebook, even if it supports USB PD. The system with nine modules and the necessary controller is currently available for $109 as part of the crowdfunding campaign. Potential supporters should inform themselves in advance about the shipping conditions, including any import conditions that may apply. The risks typical of crowdfunding campaigns apply, including the eventuality that the product make not make it to market or may not function as advertised.
