While the laptop remains rather cool under heavy load, it is worth saying that the cooling in use is probably the same as one the smaller Aspire 3 (A315-34), which uses a heat spreader, placed directly onto the CPU and a fan that moves the air around the chassis. Apparently, this is not as effective as the completely passive cooling solution, seen on the Aspire 1 (A114-32).

Interestingly enough, the cooling performance of the device is ok considering the fact that there is just a single fan for the CPU and the GPU. The temperatures during load are under control and the upper part of the shell remains cool-enough so that means that you can use the device under heavy stress without sensing a big amount of heat beneath your fingers. The fan produces a moderate amount of noise during gaming and its silent when there is a CPU load only.

Do not adjust your screen. Yes, that is the thick end of three-quarters of an inch of bezel all the way around the edges of the new Acer Aspire 3’s 17-inch LCD display. It’s as if the slim-bezel bandwagon sailed straight on by Acer’s latest affordable laptop.

Perhaps you have noticed that we used the phrase “for the price” quite a lot today. And this is for a reason – the Aspire 3 (A317-33) is so affordable, that pretty much everyone can afford it. And although it comes with a processor that has a TDP of merely 6W, the performance it offers is comparable to that of an Intel Core i3 from no more than two years ago.

The one major advantage of this laptop is its price. Besides that, there is the cooling, which is able to perfectly tame the Core i7-1255U. Indeed, this is not the most pretentious CPU when it comes to heat output, but it is pretty powerful itself. After all, the Aspire 3 manages to sustain it at 28W in long extreme workload scenarios. In addition to that, we are happy with the upgradeability. There are two SODIMM slots, which fit the easily accessible DDR4 memory. Not only that, but two M.2 PCIe x4 slots are taking care of your storage – one of them even supports Gen 4 SSDs.

Acer: The company was founded under the name of Multitech in Taiwan in 1976 and renamed to Acer or Acer Group in 1987. The product range includes, for example, laptops, tablets, smartphones, desktops, monitors and televisions. Gateway Inc. and Packard Bell also belong to the Group and sell their own laptops.
While Acer still had the third largest global market share in the notebook segment in 2008, it ranked 6th in 2016 with a market share of 6% after they had continuously lost market shares.
There are dozens of Acer laptop reviews per month, the ratings are average (as of 2016). Gateway, which has an own laptop line-up, has also belonged to the Acer Group since 2007.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce MX250: Successor of the MX150 and still based on the same Pascal GP108 chip (similar to the desktop GT 1030) but with higher clock speeds. Available in two versions, a normal 25 Watt version and a low power version with 10 Watt TDP and reduced performance. The 25 Watt version e.g. offers a 21% higher boost clock than the old MX150 leading to a 5% performance gain.
Intel UHD Graphics 620: Integrated GPU (GT2, 24 EUs) found on some Kaby-Lake-Refresh CPU models (15 W ULV series). Technically identical to the previous Kaby-Lake GPU called HD Graphics 620.

The clock rate depends on the processor model ranging from 300 MHz base to 1050 - 1100 MHz boost. The Ice-Lake chips are produced in the modern 10nm process at Intel produced.
Intel Iris Xe G7 80EUs: Integrated graphics card in Intel Tiger Lake G7 SoCs based on the new Gen. 12 architecture with 80 EUs (Execution Units / Shader Cluster). The clock rate depends on the processor model. The Tiger Lake chips are produced in the modern 10nm+ process at Intel.
Intel Iris Xe G7 96EUs: Integrated graphics card in Intel Tiger Lake G4 SoCs based on the new Gen. 12 architecture with 96 EUs (Execution Units / Shader Cluster). The clock rate depends on the processor model. The Tiger Lake chips are produced in the modern 10nm+ process at Intel.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
Intel UHD Graphics 600: Integrated low-end graphics adapter with DirectX 12 support, which can be found in some ULV SoCs from the Gemini Lake series. Compared to the HD Graphics 500, the 600 offers improved display outputs. Compared to the faster UHD Graphics 605, the 600 offers less shaders at lower clock speeds.
Intel UHD Graphics (Jasper Lake 32 EU): Integrated graphics card in Intel Jasper Lake Pentium Silver models based on the Gen. 11 architecture. Offers all 32 EUs (Execution Units / Shader Cluster). The clock rate depends on the processor model ranging from 350 MHz base to 900 MHz boost. The Jasper Lake chips are produced in the 10nm process at Intel produced (similar to Ice Lake).
Intel UHD Graphics (Jasper Lake 24 EU): Integrated graphics card in Intel Jasper Lake Celeron mid range models based on the Gen. 11 architecture. Offers 24 of the 32 EUs (Execution Units / Shader Cluster). The clock rate depends on the processor model ranging from 350 MHz base to 900 MHz boost. The Jasper Lake chips are produced in the 10nm process at Intel produced (similar to Ice Lake).
