Ace Magician AMR5 in review: Stylish Mini PC with a Ryzen 5 5600U and discreet RGB lighting

Minipc Union is a Chinese company that specializes in Mini PCs as well as all-in-one systems. At the moment, Minipc Union offers various products, among others. These include the Kamrui, Ouvislite, Nipogi, Snunmu and Ace Magician, which also includes the AMR5 that we'll examine in this review.
The Ace Magician AMR5 is a very compact Mini PC that is based on an AMD Ryzen 5 5600U. The same model was also available with an AMD Ryzen 5 4500U in the past. The AMD Radeon RX Vega 7, which we've often encountered in various laptops, is solely responsible for 3D calculations. The same is true for the Ryzen 5 5600U. It found its way into this compact PC due to its low emissions. There's 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD as mass storage device. In addition, Windows 11 Pro is preinstalled and activated.
The Ace Magician AMR5 can be purchased for 590 Euros (~$599) in the version that we reviewed. On the other hand, the model based on the AMD Ryzen 5 4500U is available for 560 Euros (~$569).

The Minipc Union Ace Magician AMR5 in detail
Case
If you picture a Mini PC, you'll probably always think of a compact square box. Here, the Ace Magician AMR5 takes a completely different approach that is oriented towards a tower PC in terms of looks. As a scaled-down version, the compact PC is only 16 centimeters tall. As for materials, there's only plastic, but the design is enhanced by the use of two color accents. The right side of the case, when viewed from the front, is held magnetically and can be removed quite easily. The RAM and SSD are hidden behind it, and they can be expanded if necessary. There's nothing to complain about in terms of sturdiness, despite the fact that aluminum hasn't been used. With a weight of 581 grams, the small computer is very light, which makes it fit on any desk. Additionally, the system can be enhanced visually with a few RGB effects.
Connectivity
The Ace Magician AMR5 offers a large number of external interfaces. These are distributed across the front and back. Users will enjoy a total of five USB ports, one of which is a Type-C port that also supports video output. This means that the small PC can be used with three monitors at the same time. However, an SD card reader isn't included.
Communication
Minipc Union uses a MediaTek RZ608 WLAN module in its Ace Magician AMR5. We're already familiar with it, since the same model was also used in the Minisforum EliteMini B550. However, the transfer rates determined with the Ace Magician AMR5 look much more promising. Our review sample delivered fast and stable transfer rates in our test environment. We used our Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000 for this test. The RJ45 port provides another alternative for wireless network communication. It's not possible to get more than 1 Gb/s here, though.
Maintenance
It's quite difficult to perform any maintenance work when it comes to accessing the CPU fan. However, users who want to expand or replace the RAM or SSD can easily access these components. The side cover can be removed without loosening any screws, and it's also equipped with a magnetic closure. We would've liked to see this option on the other side as well, in order to get to the SoC's active cooling unit faster. This was probably omitted because there are no upgrade options on that side. Therefore, if you want to access more components, you'll have to continue disassembling the device from the side that is already open.
Performance
The AMD Ryzen 5 5600U SoC provides a solid foundation for multithreaded applications. With the 16 GB of built-in DDR4 RAM, you're well equipped for most applications, without constantly working at the limit. On the other hand, the 512 GB SSD can be criticized a bit more, since Minipc Union considers the Ace Magician AMR5 to be a compact gaming PC. But since games increasingly take up more and more storage space, a 1 TB SSD would have been a better choice, in our opinion.
Test conditions
The Ace Magician AMR5 offers users the option to operate the device under three different settings. The settings can be changed via a rotary switch, which is also the power button. As a result, the SoC can be permanently operated at 12, 18 or 25 watts (Silent, Auto, Performance). We exclusively chose the Performance profile for this review in order to get the best possible results.
Processor
The built-in AMD Ryzen 5 5600U APU offers 6 Zen 3 cores with SMT, and it stems from the mobile sector. The APU, which is otherwise found in laptops, is frugal, something that benefits the compact design, since it doesn't require complex cooling. The SoC can be operated in three different modes. A maximum of 28 watts is available in Performance mode, although 25 watts is what can be maintained in the long run. The SoC can be throttled to 18 or 12 watts, respectively, the other modes. Naturally, this also impacts system performance. To illustrate this, we ran Cinebench R15 once in each of the three modes as the screenshots below show.
In a direct comparison with the competition, the Ace Magician AMR5 performs quite well, although the native octa-core CPU offers better multithread performance. However, the overall performance of the AMD Ryzen 5 5600U is slightly better than the average performance that we've been able to reach with this SoC so far. Nevertheless, you can still get more performance out of it by using slightly faster RAM, since the built-in RAM only clocked at 2,666 MHz.
More benchmarks on the processors can be found here.

Storage
Minipc Union equips the Ace Magician AMR5 with a 512 GB SSD. The model from Future Path makes use of the PCIe interface and is able to take the lead in the test with a good performance. The good 4K read rate makes it possible to load many small files quickly, which is an advantage during system startup. However, the stress test shows that this performance can't be entirely maintained over a long period of time. Despite the passive heat sink, the temperature under load seems to lead to performance having to be throttled every now and then. Unfortunately, there's no active cooling for the mass storage device. Unfortunately, with 512 GB, the model can only be recommended to a limited extent considering that it's being advertised as a gaming system. However, a second SSD can be easily installed.

Graphics card
The AMD Ryzen 5 5600U comes with an AMD Radeon RX Vega 7 iGPU, which is solely responsible for the 3D performance. This is a big burden, considering that Minipc Union advertises the Ace Magician AMR5 as a compact gaming device. Based on our experience reviewing many laptops, it's clear to us what is roughly to be expected here.
Nevertheless, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 7 is able to deliver a good performance that is above our average rates. In comparison, however, our model competes increasingly with the Minisforum EliteMini TH50 here. Since the iGPU performance depends on the amount of RAM, it should be possible to increase performance by one or two percentage points by using faster modules.

Gaming performance
It's clear that users will have to put up with limitations when it comes to gaming performance, because the AMD Radeon RX Vega 7 quickly reaches its limits in modern games. However, those who like older and less demanding titles can definitely expect playable frame rates. In 720p and with low details, the Ace Magician AMR5 also handles modern games like F1 22. Nevertheless, you should be aware that the AMD Radeon RX Vega 7's performance can't keep up with that of a modern dedicated graphics card.

Temperature
The Ace Magician AMR5's case doesn't heat up excessively, which is due to the material selection. In addition, the fan makes sure that waste heat is directly dissipated out of the case at the back, so that no excessive heat buildup develops. When the SoC is at its maximum of 28 watts, it reaches about 84 °C (~183 °F) for a short time at peak load. The temperature settles at around 75-78 °C (~167-172 °F) over the course of time.
Energy consumption
The Ace Magician AMR5 is relatively frugal in terms of energy consumption, but Beelink shows that this can be done even better with the SER4. Nonetheless, the average of 46.4 watts is a good rate that a conventional desktop PC can't come close to. The external power adapter supplies a maximum of 65 watts and is of sufficient capacity. This leaves enough headroom for a second SSD.

Verdict - Modern connectivity packed into a sleek case
Minipc Union doesn't offer a conventional ready-made Mini PC with the Ace Magician AMR5, because this model stands out from the crowd due to its slightly different design. The compact PC catches the eye by resembling conventional desktop PCs and providing subtle lighting. All the while, the model is very compact, lightweight, and it offers a modern SoC in the form of the AMD Ryzen 5 5600U. The hexa-core processor is frugal, and its solid performance ensures fast working speeds. At the same time, the speed of the built-in RAM is something that can be criticized. Valuable potential is being wasted here; the use of faster RAM could have narrowed the gap to the competition a bit.
Thanks to its size, the compact Ace Magician AMR5 fits on any desk. With its great RGB lighting, the compact computer catches the eye without looking garish.
When it comes to compact gaming PCs, we only see the Ace Magician AMR5 as an entry-level PC for playing simple or older titles. Unfortunately, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 7 lacks the necessary performance to render modern games smoothly in 1080p. As far as the port selection is concerned, there are many things that the manufacturer has done right. From the placement of the ports to the number of them, there's not much that we can criticize here. Ultimately, up to three displays can be used at the same time.
Small but nice features, such as the possibility to let the system run in various performance modes on-the-fly, work well and are rarely seen. If you don't need the hexa-core's full performance, you can confidently use Silent mode here. This saves energy and ensures low noise levels. However, we would have liked to see a few more options in the settings for the RGB lighting. The Ace Magician AMR5 is currently available for 590 Euros (~$598). A fair price, since the competition isn't necessarily available at lower prices at the moment.
