Dell has introduced the G5 15 Special Edition gaming laptop that is powered by the latest AMD mobile offerings including the 7nm Ryzen 7 4800H and the Radeon RX 5600M. The Dell G5 15 Special Edition comes with an optional 144 Hz FreeSync FHD display and includes the Alienware Command Center for system tuning and personalization.

Dell is betting big on AMD's new mobile offerings with the Dell G5 15 Special Edition (SE). The G5 15 SE is powered by the latest 7nm Ryzen 7 4800H and the Radeon RX 5600M with the promise of offering a great mobile 1080p gaming experience.

The Ryzen 7 4800H is an 8-core 16-thread part with performance touted to oust current Intel offerings such as the Core i7-9750H. The processor also features AMD SmartShift for dynamic power allocation between the CPU and GPU for a more efficient operation. The Dell G5 15 SE comes with a 15.6-inch FHD panel with optional 144 Hz FreeSync support for tear-free visuals. Powering the display is a Radeon RX 5600M GPU, the mobile variant of the just announced RX 5600 XT. The RX 5600M is a mobile NVIDIA GeForce GTX 2060 competitor featuring 36 CUs and variable clock speeds that are determined by the TDP, which starts from 60W.

The Dell G5 15 Special Edition offers single and dual drive storage options with up to 1 TB PCIe NVMe SSD and/or a 2 TB 5400 RPM HDD. Other features include an optional WASD 4-zone backlit RGB keyboard, Alienware Command Center for controlling system performance and setting-up gaming profiles, Nahimic 3D audio, and more.

The Dell G5 15 Special Edition will be available from April 2020 at a starting price of US$799, which is a very lucrative price for a capable gaming laptop. We look forward to testing this laptop soon to see how well the latest all-AMD combination bodes for mobile gamers.

Update: Changed 1660 Ti competitor to RTX 2060 (according to AMD)

I am a cell and molecular biologist and computers have been an integral part of my life ever since I laid my hands on my first PC which was based on an Intel Celeron 266 MHz processor, 16 MB RAM and a modest 2 GB hard disk. Since then, I’ve seen my passion for technology evolve with the times. From traditional floppy based storage and running DOS commands for every other task, to the connected cloud and shared social experiences we take for granted today, I consider myself fortunate to have witnessed a sea change in the technology landscape. I honestly feel that the best is yet to come, when things like AI and cloud computing mature further. When I am not out finding the next big cure for cancer, I read and write about a lot of technology related stuff or go about ripping and re-assembling PCs and laptops.
