AMD has released the Technical Preview of Fluid Motion Frames 2, which promises noticeably better performance, especially in low-power devices. YouTuber ETA Prime has put it to the test on the Asus ROG Ally X handheld, and the technology offers noticeably better performance in many games.

The AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2 Technical Preview is now available. While it's not officially released for gaming handhelds, you can force install the new driver and the software to test it out. YouTuber ETA Prime has got it working on Asus ROG Ally X and has tested the performance of this new technology.

Cyberpunk 2077 is the first game ETA Prime has tested. At 1080p, medium settings, and AMD FSR set to balanced, Asus ROG Ally X can run the game at an average of 56 FPS. With AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2 enabled and the performance mode set to "performance," it jumps to the low 80s. However, there are some sudden FPS dips, which could be due to the early nature of the technology.

On Red Dead Redemption 2, the gaming handheld could achieve an average of around 54 FPS at 900p resolution, visuals set to low, and FSR at balanced mode. But after ETA Prime turned on Fluid Motion Frames 2 and other settings left at auto, the ROG Ally X (available at Best Buy) could run the game at over 100 FPS.

Another game that ETA Prime has tested on the handheld is Horizon Zero Dawn, which ran at an average of around 62 FPS on 1080p with "Original" settings and balanced FSR mode. After turning Fluid Motion Frames 2, the FPS goes over 100. One important thing mentioned in the video is that you can get better performance bumps when you increase the TDP.

For example, on Forza Horizon 5, with Fluid Motion Frames 2 turned on, the ROG Ally X can run the game at around 100 FPS at 1080p, the settings turned low, and the TDP at 15W. When the TDP is bumped to 25W, the FPS jumps over 140 with the same settings.

Overall, it seems that AMD's Fluid Motion Frames 2 has the potential to improve the experience of gaming handhelds. While there are some issues present in the Technical Preview, AMD will likely get them fixed before the stable version is out.
