Schenker Vision 14 2023 review: Magnesium ultrabook with very long battery life
Schenker has upgraded its compact Vision 14 ultrabook with the latest Raptor-Lake processors from Intel and the optional GeForce RTX 3050 Refresh. Our review sample is the iGPU model with the Core i7-13700H, 32 GB RAM, a fast 1 TB SSD and a matte 14-inch IPS panel (16:10) with a resolution of 2,880 x 1,800 and a frequency of 90 Hz. The Vision 14 starts at EUR 1,549; our test configuration costs around EUR 1,680.

Case & equipment
Nothing has changed about the Vision 14's case compared to last year and it still uses a magnesium alloy, either in silver or black. Apart from the color, there are no differences, but the black variant is much more susceptible to fingerprints. The stability of the base unit is very good, but the lid is very thin and it twists a little under torsional stress, which did not result in creaking noises or image errors. The weak point this year is once again the hinge, as the lid visibly teeters. The maximum opening angle is around 160 degrees.
The bottom cover is secured with five Phillips screws only and is easy to remove. The WLAN module, the two RAM modules and the M.2 2280 SSD are replaceable. However, due to the large 99 Wh battery, there is no longer a second M2 slot.
Unlike its predecessors, the Vision 14 is only available with the large 99 Wh battery; the slightly thinner (1 mm) and lighter (~1.1 kg) model with the 53 Wh battery is no longer offered and so the weight has increased to 1.27 kg (models with RTX GPU ~1.31). Nevertheless, the Vision 14 is still one of the lighter models. Only the LG Gram Style 14 is noticeably lighter at less than one kilogram, but some devices are heavier at 1.5-1.6 kg.
Depending on the choice of GPU, the Vision 14 comes with either a 130-watt or 150-watt power supply. The 150-watt charger is more modern and compact, but both weigh around 500 grams and use a proprietary charging port.
There is little to criticize in terms of ports because everything you needed for everyday life is available. Thanks to a Thunderbolt 4 port on the right side, you can also connect external graphics cards. In our iGPU variant, the left USB-C port does not support the Display Port ALT function; this only works in the Vision 14 with the Nvidia GPU. USB-C power supplies are supported (min. 65 watts, max. 100 watts).
The fully fledged SD card reader has become slower compared to last year's model and now appears to be connected via USB 2.0, since we determined transfer rates of just over 20 MB/s only. The WLAN module (Intel AX201) is also unchanged and offers solid performance. 6 GHz networks (Wi-Fi 6E) are not supported by the antenna configuration of the Vision 14, which is why no corresponding module is offered. The 1080p webcam serves its purpose.

Input devices - Backlit keyboard and glass touchpad
No changes in the input devices have taken place compared to last year's model. The backlit keyboard offers a comfortable typing feel and long texts pose no issue, but the keys feel slightly wobbly in our review sample. The large glass touchpad also works excellently; only the clicks are still somewhat too loud.
Display - IPS panel at 90 Hz
Again, we can be brief about the display because it is still the matte 3K IPS display (2,880 x 1,800) in a 16:10 format. The subjective picture quality is very good and bright surfaces are not grainy. Movements are smooth and there are no ghosting effects, even though the response times are not among the fastest. PWM flickering was not detected.
Schenker specifies a brightness of 380 cd/m², which was also confirmed in our tests. However, the values are slightly worse than those of the predecessor, which corresponds to the normal series dispersion. The black value is a decent 0.27 cd/m², resulting in a very good maximum contrast ratio of almost 1,500:1. We measured the panel using professional CalMAN software and the values are already very good in delivery state. There is no color cast and, with the exception of 100% red, colors also fall below the important DeltaE-2000 deviation of 3. We were able to improve the grayscale reproduction somewhat with our own calibration, but this is not really necessary. The panel fully covers the sRGB color space.

The matte display of the Vision 14 can also be used comfortably outdoors and there are no major problems in terms of viewing angle stability. The panel only brightens a little when viewed from above angles.
Performance - Raptor Lake-H45
The Vision 14 M23 is only available with the Raptor Lake Core i7-13700H. As previously mentioned, the GeForce RTX 3050 Refresh with 6 GB VRAM is optionally available (surcharge: EUR 275) and compared to last year's model, DDR5-4800 RAM is now used instead of DDR4-3200 RAM.
Testing conditions
Schenker offers two different performance profiles in the preinstalled Control Center: Silent and Performance. In Silent, the maximum TDP of the processor is reduced to 20 watts, while this is 45 -> 40 watts for Performance (as well as for both subprofiles Balanced and Enthusiast). This results in a reduction compared to the predecessor, where the processor was allowed to consume up to 60 watts for short bursts before leveling off at 40 watts. We chose the profile Enthusiast for the following benchmarks and measurements.
Processor - Core i7-13700H
The Core i7-13700H is the direct successor of last year's Core i7-12700H (Alder Lake) and the performance values are ultimately identical. In the current Vision 14 M23, however, the processor is only allowed to consume 45 watts for short periods of time instead of 60 watts as in last year's model, which is why multi-core performance is initially worse in the new model. Under sustained load, both operate at the specified 40 watts and are practically on par.
Cinebench R15 Multi Sustained Load
Although the Core i7-13700H is a 45-watt processor, it is rarely used as such and is able to consume more than 120 watts in extreme cases. One might therefore have the idea that a Raptor-Lake P processor (4 P cores) would have been the better choice, but this is not the case. This can be seen very clearly in a direct comparison with the Core i7-1360P in the Lenovo Yoga 9 14. Thanks to higher short-term consumption, the i7-1360P is initially faster, but at 38 watts it clearly falls behind the i7-13700H at 40 watts (~13%).
On battery power, the processor is allowed to consume a maximum of 40 watts (and it takes a few seconds until the consumption is actually at 40 watts), which is why multi-core performance is about 14% lower. More CPU benchmarks are available here.

You can select different SSDs in the configurator and our test device contains the 1 TB version of the Samsung 990 Pro, which is a fast PCIe 4.0 drive. The transfer rates were extremely high at up to 7 GB/s and remained stable, even under prolonged load, which is not a given. Further SSD benchmarks are listed in our tech section.

Graphics card
Graphics output is still handled by Intel's integrated Iris Xe Graphics G7. Those who opt for the optional dedicated GeForce GPU will now get the refresh version of the GeForce RTX 3050 with 6 GB of RAM; last year's model was the RTX 3050 Ti with 4 GB of RAM. The performance of the two dGPUs should be roughly comparable, but thanks to additional VRAM, the new RTX 3050 Refresh has fewer restrictions in high details or high resolutions.
The performance of the Iris Xe Graphics G7 remains unchanged, unsurprisingly, and is of course sufficient for everyday activities such as high-resolution video playback, but those who want to do some gaming with the Vision 14 should definitely invest the extra EUR 275 for the dedicated GPU, otherwise you'll be limited to low/medium details, even with older titles. At least performance remains stable during prolonged gaming sessions.
On battery power, the GPU performance is about 10% lower. More benchmarks are available here.

Noise
Unfortunately, the two fans fire up quite quickly in everyday use, which also applies to Silent mode. The volume isn't particularly high, but still a little annoying. Under load the fans can quickly spin up to 42-45 dB(A), which is quite high for a pure iGPU model that also uses liquid metal for better heat dissipation and not far from its predecessor with the RTX 3050 Ti, where we were recorded a maximum of just under 49 dB(A). In Silent mode, the two fans reach a maximum of 36.4 dB(A). No other electronic noises were detected.

Temperature
The surface temperatures of the Vision 14 never become critical. In normal use, the case always stays pleasantly cool and we only measured more than 40 °C in a few places during our stress test. The hottest spot is in the upper middle keyboard area, which is also noticeable when typing, but this does not throw up any limitations. Even under load, the laptop can be placed on the thighs without issue.
In stress testing with combined CPU/GPU load, the processor initially works at 45 watts and then levels off at 40 watts after a few minutes.

Speakers
We see a difference in the stereo speakers compared to last year's model: the overall quality has improved, even if the sound is still a bit thin. At least the Vision 14 is now on a comparable level with other rivals such as the Yoga Pro 7 14.

Power consumption
Schenker has been able to reduce the idle power consumption a little because the new model only needs a maximum of 8 instead of the predecessor's 11.4 watts. The slightly darker display certainly plays a role here, but that doesn't explain the large difference, which is why there must have been further optimizations. We measured a maximum of 76 watts under load, but this settles at around 68 watts after a few minutes. So the included 130-watt power supply is actually oversized and a more compact 90-watt model would have sufficed here.

Battery life
The battery life of the Vision 14 is extremely good and the optimizations compared to the predecessor are noticeable here as well. We recorded almost 14 hours with the large 99 Wh battery in our WLAN test at 150 cd/m² (corresponding to 37% of maximum brightness). This was still more than 10 hours at full screen brightness, which is a significant improvement and only the WQHD variant of Lenovo's Yoga Pro 7 14 can keep up here. A full charge takes 2 hours with the device turned on and 70% is available again after just under an hour.
Pros
Cons
Verdict - Vision 14 2023 convinces with a lot of stamina
The 2023 model of the Schenker Vision 14 feels very familiar. The compact Ultrabook has undergone a number of changes in recent years and there is now only the basic variant with a large 99 Wh battery, which is why the second M.2 slot from earlier models is no longer available. The weight is now just under 1.3 kg and has clearly moved away from the 1 kg model. The magnesium chassis (optionally in silver or black) is still impressive in terms of quality and the maintenance options are also very good. Only the somewhat wobbly hinge remains a weak point in the design.
The new Raptor Lake processor offers surprisingly slightly less performance than the old Alder Lake model, which is due to the reduced power limit under short-term load. For us, this drop is incomprehensible, but overall performance remains decent. A current AMD processor would naturally be the better choice in this performance class of around 40 watts and would also offer the faster iGPU, but is not available. The 90 Hz, 3K display is still good and has no issues in everyday life, but competing brands now offer a number of models with 120 Hz or P3 coverage, so Schenker needs to move up a level soon in order to remain competitive.
The Schenker Vision 14 M23 with the new Raptor Lake processor is only a minor upgrade if you choose the iGPU variant. However, it is still a good overall package with improved battery life and good maintenance options, but the somewhat restless fans during everyday tasks can be annoying.
A big advantage is certainly the enormous battery life, which is due not only to the 99 Wh battery but also to the optimized power consumption. Even at full screen brightness, our WLAN test runs for more than 10 hours and, at adjusted brightness, 13-14 hours is easily possible. Almost all competitors are clearly at a disadvantage here. The fact that the iGPU version also comes with a massive 130-watt power supply is unnecessary; a more compact 90-watt model would have sufficed.
However, the Vision 14 with a base price of EUR 1,549 is not a bargain and competing devices in this price range are many. The very good Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 with its AMD processor and 90 Hz display is already available for around EUR 1,100 (US$1050 via Lenovo US) and the variant with its Core i7, RTX 4050 and a 3K display with 120 Hz for around EUR 1,700, so clearly cheaper than the dGPU variant of the Vision 14.
