Lenovo Yoga 9i 14 G8 2023 convertible in review: Intel Raptor Lake disappoints
Lenovo offers a high-end 14-inch convertible in the Yoga 9i 14, which is now entering its 8th generation. Appearance-wise, the new Yoga 9i 14 G8 remains faithful to its predecessor, but uses Intel's new mobile processor from the Raptor Lake generation (13th gen), the Core i7-1360P. In review here is the model with the 2.8K OLED screen, but the variant with the 4K OLED, which we reviewed last year, is alternatively available. Our test device with 512 GB SSD storage currently costs US$1,499.99 on Lenovo's website in the USA; the model with 4K OLED and 1 TB SSD storage costs US$1,749.99.
In the following review, we focus mainly on the new Intel processor and the 2.8K OLED panel. For detailed information about the case and input devices, we refer to our extensive review of the Yoga 9i 14 G7 from last year:

Case & Equipment
Lenovo completely redesigned the chassis of the Yoga 9 14 last year, so the design is now primarily rounder compared to previous versions. There are also contrasting elements such as the polished surrounding edges or the display hinge, which also houses part of the sound system. In addition to the Storm Gray of our test device, a silver-colored model is also available.
Despite the 16:10 panel, the bottom edge of the display in particular is still very wide, which negatively impacts both the screen-to-body ratio (78%) and the case's overall depth. Moreover, the two halves of the case are not completely flush with each other when the laptop is folded.
Both the workmanship and stability are very good and we have no criticism here. The central hinge in particular is very well adjusted and holds the comparatively large lid very securely in position. Fingerprints and dirt are not really much of an issue for the matte metal surfaces. In terms of ports, the WLAN module and the webcam, no changes have been made compared to the 2022 model.

Maintenance
Access to the internals of the Yoga 9 14 is still unnecessarily complicated, with three small screws under the rear rubber foot, which is glued in place. Once the bottom cover is removed, the two fans can be cleaned and the M.2 2280 SSD can also be replaced.
Input Devices - Precision Pen 2 included
We also refer to our review of the predecessor for the input devices, as there are no differences here. The key travel is comparatively short, but the keyboard still offers precise and crisp feedback and thus a very good typing feel overall. In addition, the keyboard backlight can be activated via a sensor, which also works well. However, you have to get used to the additional column on the right side.
The clickpad works flawlessly, but the clicking noise still sounds very loud and cheap. The Yoga 9i 14 also comes with the Lenovo Precision Pen 2 by default, which cannot be stowed in the case, but offers the ergonomics of a normal pen and works very well overall.
Display - 2.8K OLED with 90 Hz
Lenovo offers two different glossy OLED touchscreens for the Yoga 9 14. The 4K OLED touchscreen, which we tested in the 2022 model, is still optionally available, but the 2.8K OLED touchscreen is installed by default. According to the spec sheet, this offers a slightly lower resolution of 2,880 x 1,800, but a higher frequency of 90 Hz. This works well in the case of moving images, but the 2.8K OLED also displays a moiré effect, i.e. a slight grid (not visible on the subpixel image). This is particularly noticeable on bright surfaces and at short sitting distances. This shouldn't be a problem at normal sitting distances, but you should pay the surcharge of US$250 for the 4K panel if you want to avoid this phenomenon and be on the safe side.
The core values of the two panels are comparable, as we determined a maximum SDR brightness of around 380 cd/m² and a maximum of around 570 cd/m² in HDR mode, but Windows' HDR implementation is still in need of improvement. HDR mode has to be manually activated in the settings and then the color management no longer works either. As expected, the black level is extremely low, resulting in a very high contrast ratio. Backlight bleeding does not exist in OLED panels, but PWM at a frequency of 360 Hz kicks in from a brightness of 86% or less.

* ... smaller is better
We measured the display using professional CalMAN software (X-Rite i1 Pro 2) and the picture quality is already decent in its factory state, especially in the grayscale. No color cast is visible; only the color temperature is slightly too warm. However, there are some deviations in the colors, which we were unable to improve significantly, even with our own calibration. As with the 4K panel, the Yoga 9 14 is thus unsuitable for image/video editing, despite the high color space coverage.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)
Screen flickering / PWM detected | 360 Hz | ≤ 86 % brightness setting | |
The display backlight flickers at 360 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 86 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 360 Hz is relatively high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. However, there are reports that some users are still sensitive to PWM at 500 Hz and above, so be aware. In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 17900 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured. |
The highly reflective touchscreen is problematic outdoors. The high contrast of the OLED panel helps, but reflections quickly become a problem. In terms of viewing angle stability, there are basically no limitations, but a slight blue cast is visible at certain angles, which is typical for OLED screens.
Performance - Intel Raptor Lake
The new Yoga 9i 14 G8 is currently on offer with just the new Intel Core i7-1360P and 16 GB LPDDR5-5200 RAM. Only the hard drive capacity has different options, namely 512 GB and 1 TB.
Testing Conditions
In addition to the performance settings in Windows, the preinstalled Lenovo Vantage app offers three different profiles (Battery Saver, Intelligent Cooling, and High Performance) that can be selected either in the app or via the Fn+Q key combination. We used High Performance mode for the following benchmarks and measurements.
Processor - Core i7-1360P
In contrast to the new mobile HX CPUs, not much has changed in the U and P series of the Raptor Lake generation compared to the old Alder Lake models. Apart from a slightly higher maximum clock, the new Core i7-1360P also corresponds to the old Core i7-1260P (4 performance cores & 8 efficiency cores), which we have already seen in our extensive analysis. In the Yoga 9i 14 G8 (as in the predecessor), this operates at up to 64 watts in short bursts and at up to 38 watts constantly, which is why we also have a direct comparison here. So the Yoga 9i 14 should once again be one of the fastest Raptor Lake P notebooks this year, and we also see an 8% lead over the Core i7-1260P in the old Yoga 9i 14 across all of our CPU benchmarks. However, this also means that the new Raptor Lake is only just ahead of the old AMD Ryzen 7 6800U and the small Apple M2 Pro (10 cores) in Cinebench R23 Multi, for example, while the M2 Pro with 12 cores is significantly faster. Only in the single-core tests does Intel still have an advantage, but we'll get to the efficiency in a moment.
Cinebench R15 Multi Sustained Load
The advantage of the new Raptor-Lake mobile processor quickly fizzles out in our Cinebench R15 multi-loop and it is only very slightly ahead of the old Yoga 9i 14 with its Alder-Lake chip. At least performance remains stable in battery mode.

* ... smaller is better
We also took a look at the efficiency of the new Raptor Lake Core i7-1360P, whereby the measurement was carried out with an external display in order to remove the influence of the internal display. Since we've already seen that the Core i7-1360P offers slightly more performance than the Core i7-1260P in the old Yoga 9i 14 with identical power limits, the efficiency has also increased slightly, both in the single-core and multi-core tests. However, Intel is still clearly behind last year's AMD Ryzen 7 6800U as well as Apple's current M2 Pro chips here.

Storage Devices
Lenovo again equips the current Yoga 9i 14 with fast PCIe 4.0 SSDs and in our case, the SKhynix PC801 with a storage capacity of 512 GB is used. Transfer rates are very good overall and above all, the drive can easily maintain its performance under prolonged load. After booting for the first time, the user has 420 GB at his/her disposal. More SSD benchmarks are available here.

Graphics Card
When it comes to the integrated graphics card, the new Raptor Lake mobile processors are a disappointment, as they still use the well-known Iris Xe Graphics G7 with 96 EUs, with which we are already familiar from the old Tiger Lake processors. The maximum clock has increased slightly, but the lead over the Core i7-1260P in the old Yoga 9i 14 in the synthetic benchmarks is negligible at 1-2%. In this regard, Intel can neither keep up with the integrated Radeon 680M from AMD nor with the current M2 Pro GPUs from Apple. The Xe Graphics G7 is nevertheless still sufficient for everyday use and the playback of high-resolution videos is also possible without issue, but the new iGPUs from AMD are scheduled to be released in the coming months.
The Xe Graphics G7 is also clearly behind the integrated Radeon 680M in gaming and anything more than medium details is not possible in many titles. Current and demanding titles (e.g. Cyberpunk 2077) are practically unplayable with the Intel GPU. At least GPU performance remains stable both under constant load and on battery power. More GPU benchmarks are listed in our tech section.

Emissions & Energy Management
Noise
The fans often stand still in everyday use, but even a low CPU load quickly causes both fans to start up, especially in High Performance mode. Due to the high power limits, the processor gets very hot, very quickly, which then of course has to be cooled. This quickly gets annoying in practice, so if you don't require full performance, you should use a weaker performance profile for simple tasks. Under somewhat higher load, the two fans also quickly reach the maximum of 45 dB(A), which is simply much too loud in view of the performance level. No other electronic noises, such as coil whine, were detected.

Temperature
The metal chassis of the Yoga 9i 14 hardly heats up in everyday use and surface temperatures do not become problematic at all, even under load. The keyboard remains quite comfortable under load and allows for typing without limitations. The hotspot is located in the central rear area of the underside, where the processor is also located. We measured a maximum of 45 °C here in the stress test, so you can place the convertible on your thighs without need for concern.
In stress testing, the power consumption quickly drops from the maximum 64 watts to 30-36 watts, although consumption fluctuates periodically as the test progresses. No reduction in performance after the stress test was registered.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 39.7 °C / 103 F, compared to the average of 35.3 °C / 96 F, ranging from 19.6 to 55.7 °C for the class Convertible.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 45.4 °C / 114 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 24.4 °C / 76 F, compared to the device average of 30.2 °C / 86 F.
(±) Playing The Witcher 3, the average temperature for the upper side is 32.4 °C / 90 F, compared to the device average of 30.2 °C / 86 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 25.4 °C / 77.7 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(+) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 28.1 °C / 82.6 F (+2.7 °C / 4.9 F).

Speakers
The installed sound system (2x woofers in the front of the base unit and 2x tweeters in the display hinge) produces very good, room-filling sound and is on par with the Huawei MateBook X Pro as well as the Apple MacBook Pro 14. Different profiles can be selected with the preinstalled Dolby software and settings can also be manually adjusted.

Power Consumption
Our test device with its 2.8K OLED touchscreen consumes slightly less power in idle than the 4K variant of the predecessor, but both are fundamentally on the same level. Due to the identical power limits, this also applies to the consumption values under load. Lenovo again supplies the convertible with a 100 watt power supply, which is also necessary in this case. We observed a maximum of 96 watts at the beginning of the stress test, which quickly leveled off at around 60 watts. So there is still room for charging the battery in such a scenario.

Battery Life
As soon as you unplug the power supply, the device switches back to 60 Hz by default (which can be deactivated in the settings). However, the 2.8K screen does not seem to work as efficiently as the 4K version at an adjusted brightness of 150 cd/m² (corresponding to 71% of the maximum SDR brightness in our test device), because the Yoga 9i 14 2022 held out with longer battery runtimes. In the WLAN test, we recorded just under 8 hours for the new model (~7:20 hours in 90 Hz mode) and slightly more than 6 hours at full brightness (~5:30 hours in 90 Hz mode). The video test resulted in just over 11 hours at 60 Hz and 150 cd/m².

Verdict - A Yoga 9i 14 with 4K OLED is the better choice
Our verdict on the new Lenovo Yoga 9i 14 G8 is divided, since it is also the first device with the new Intel Raptor Lake P series mobile processor, the Core i7-1360P. Its CPU performance is slightly better than that of its direct predecessor (8% more performance on average in our CPU benchmarks), but the integrated graphics card hasn't changed and so the new processor is somewhat disappointing overall. Furthermore, the power limits are still very high, which also results in greater fan activity.
On the other hand, the CPU performance is still good and it is a very responsive device. The well-known strengths of the predecessor (great case quality, good keyboard, excellent speakers) remain unchanged. Given the high price, however, we recommend the 4K OLED touchscreen, which we also tested in last year's model. It offers better subjective image quality and was slightly more economical in our battery tests. The 2.8K OLED is by no means bad, but it does produce a slight grid effect (i.e. a moiré pattern), which is particularly noticeable on bright surfaces. The degree to which this is annoying depends on your subjective perception and should not actually be too much of an issue at normal sitting distances from the screen. The HDR capabilities of both models are comparable, but the Windows implementation of HDR still leaves a lot to be desired.
While the new Yoga 9i 14 2023 offers the brand new Intel Raptor Lake Core i7-1360P and is a very good convertible overall, the performance increase over the previous model is minor and so there is no reason to upgrade. Instead, we recommend interested buyers to go for the 2022 model with its Alder Lake processor and 4K OLED.
No real changes have been made, apart from the new processor, which is why we strongly recommend purchasing the older model with its Alder Lake processor if you are seriously interested. The new AMD mobile processors are still a long way off and there aren't many high-end convertibles with AMD hardware either. An alternative is the Lenovo Yoga 7 14 with the Ryzen 7 6800U, but you cannot get around the 2.8K screen. A strong notebook alternative with a great IPS display (without PWM) is the Huawei MateBook X Pro 2022, which also offers a good keyboard and great speakers. If you require more performance and also like to play games, you should also take a look at the Schenker Vision 14 with it's decdicated GeForce RTX 3050 Ti. For better HDR capabilities, there is currently nothing better than the Apple MacBook Pro 14 with its mini-LED screen.
