Who would have thought in the summer of 2024 that Samsung would manage to make the dream of a 9-mm-thick Galaxy foldable device come true within a year, thus making the Galaxy Z Fold7 competitive again? A few weeks prior to the Galaxy Unpacked launch event, a first model has now made it into a YouTube video. However, it's a non-functional dummy that is said to at least reflect the final design.
The dummy actually measures 9 millimeters when folded, making it increasingly difficult for competitors Honor and Vivo, both of whom are entering the (Chinese) market with the Magic V5 and X Fold 5 before the Galaxy Z Fold7 launch, to advertise their respective devices as the 'thinnest foldable'. The difference is particularly evident in a direct comparison with the Galaxy Z Fold6, which the YouTuber compares to the successor from several angles. The Galaxy S25 Ultra is also used for comparison, as well as the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition.
Wider cover screen, larger flex display
In direct comparison, not only does the significantly thinner hinge stand out, but also the larger 6.5-inch cover display, which now comes in a wider 21:9 format instead of 22:9. Compared to the Special Edition, there's less difference, but Samsung has also managed to slim things down here too. According to earlier reports, the weight has also been further reduced from 239 grams to 215 grams compared to the Galaxy Z Fold6. Furthermore, the Galaxy Z Fold7 appears to measure 4.5 mm when unfolded, according to the classic measurement method. The video also shows the classic punch-hole camera in the inner display, which was already visible in the official render images. The display bezels have also been slightly reduced.
