Lack of Security with Bluetooth-Modules from Toshiba

The drivers of Bluetooth modules, implemented in many notebook series from Toshiba, contain a severe safety gap. An aggressor can infiltrate and execute code - or crash Windows XP. Toshiba already offers a patch.

The error concerns all modules, which are operated with drivers of the versions 3.x or 4.x up to the version 4.00.35. 64-Bit-versions of the drivers are not concerned. With most pre-installed Bluetooth drivers one can examine the version number by means of the Bluetooth icon within the info range (Systray). The discoverers of the gap, SecureWorks, call Asus, Dell and Sony as concerned manufacturers. However, Bluetooth modules from Toshiba might be still in many other mobile computers.

SecureWorks does not explain, how the new attack exactly works. The results can be transferred harming code or a crash of Windows. As requirement only the Bluetooth module must be switched on and in the net adjusted as visibly. That is realised with most installations.

Before the announcement of the new gap SecureWorks contacted Toshiba, so the manufacturer already cam offer a patch.
