HP to focus on CULV based ultrathins
HP prepping an 11.6-inch and a 10.1-inch netbook
Earlier this week, it was reported that Acer and Asus will not launch any new netbook based on Intel’s new Pine Trail Mobile technology till its formal launch in Q1 2010. Instead it was being said that Acer and Asus will concentrate on CULV (Consumer ultra low voltage) based ultrathins with screen sizes ranging from 12-inch to 15.6-inch during second half of 2009.
Now, HP has also decided to focus on the CULV based ultrathin segment and has supposedly commissioned a new 11.6-inch CULV based machine that will go into production next month, with production of a 10.1-inch netbook revision beginning in September. CULV processors are fast becoming popular as they consume lesser power thereby improving battery life which is a pre-requisite for portability. These CULV chips slot in-between Intel’s netbook range of N- and Z-series CPUs and their mainstream line of notebook processors.
While Quanta is believed to be working on the 11.6-inch model, Its rival Inventec will be working on the 10.1-inch netbook revision which will continue to use the Intel Atom N series processor. HP is also planning to release two enterprise notebooks which will cater to the 13.3-inch and 14-inch markets. Compal electronics will start shipping these notebooks in August.
