Intel presents its new Classmate

Intel introduced the second generation of its Classmate PC. It has a 9” display and a Celeron CPU, and supports Windows XP and Linux.

Intel presented the second generation of its Classmate PC at the Intel Developer Forum in Shanghai. The purpose of this low-cost notebook is increasing education in developing nations. The Classmate is a competitor to the One Laptop Per Child project, which also wants to boost education is these countries.

The second generation Classmate is equipped with an Intel Celeron CPU and has 512 MB RAM. Intel also wants to use their new Atom CPU in one of the next generations. The notebook is equipped with a 9” display and a 30 GB hard disk. Furthermore, the Classmate provides WLAN, with 802.11b/g standard. A Webcam and a 6-cell battery are included as well.

Windows XP or Linux can be used as operating system, and a bunch of pre-installed educational software is also included.
