Impressive Samsung foldable sales pave way for Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Flip4 dominance

Samsung pushed the foldable market forward with the launch of the Galaxy Fold back in 2019. That headstart helped place Samsung in pole position in that segment in 2021, with the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 utterly dominating foldable sales in 2021.

According to a report by analytics firm Omdia, Samsung ruled firmly over the segment, with five entries in the top 11 chart. Of those, the Galaxy Z Flip3 sits way ahead of the pack with 4.6 million units shipped in 2021, versus the 1.1 million Galaxy Z Flip units it shipped in 2020. For the Galaxy Z Fold3, 2021 shipments stood at 2.5 million, versus the 700 thousand Galaxy Z Fold2 shipments in 2020. Both those phones make up 7.1 million shipments, or a whopping 61% of the total foldable market in 2021. 

The Huawei Mate X2 comes in third with 500 thousand shipments, followed right after by the Galaxy Z Flip 5G and the Galaxy Z Fold 2. Other foldables like the Xiaomi Mix Fold, OPPO Find N, and Huawei P50 Pocket find a place on the ranking but with almost inconsequential sales figures. 

Samsung is king of this segment and rightfully so. While offerings like the OPPO Find N look to be catching up with Samsung's models, global availability remains an issue. The South Korean company will be hoping to build on this success with the release of the Galaxy Z Flip4 and Galaxy Z Fold4 later this year. According to insider information, Samsung may be projecting a 70% rise in shipments this year.
