LetsGoDigital has discovered a new patent filed by Samsung with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Published last November, the patented design looks remarkably like the Mi Mix Alpha that Xiaomi introduced in 2019. However, manufacturing issues eventually cancelled the project, albeit nearly a year after Xiaomi revealed the Mi Mix Alpha.
Unlike Xiaomi's effort, Samsung's design features a display that wraps entirely around the frame, eliminating the need for the Mi Mix Alpha's vertical bridge. Understandably, the device's side frames lack any sort of buttons or apertures. Instead, Samsung has positioned a power button on the device's topside and has included a capacitive volume slider, mirroring the Huawei Mate 30 Pro. In saying that, the boxy design with rounded edges reminds us of the Galaxy Note series, which Samsung brought back this year with the Galaxy S22 Ultra.
As always, LetsGoDigital has created high-quality renders of the patented design, this time in collaboration with Technizo Concept. Referred to as the Galaxy S20 Ultra 6G by Technizo Concept, there is no indication that Samsung plans to release a device by that name any time soon. Based on Samsung's current naming scheme, it would take the company until 2030 before it reaches the Galaxy S30 series.
Also, patents are not always a good indication of devices that a company will bring to market. Typically, Samsung Display showcases more unusual designs, such as the Flex G and Flex S concept smartphones. Currently, the Flex S is Samsung's closest equivalent to its patented design with a display that wraps around the front of its frame.
