Verdict on the Huawei P50 Pocket: A foldable smartphone turns into a fashion accessory and camera dream

The P50 Pocket surprises us with a great photo quality in our test.
The P50 Pocket surprises us with a great photo quality in our test.
The Huawei P50 Pocket offers some interesting equipment in addition to the foldable OLED panel. However, the high price point of the foldable may not turn a purchase of the 1200-Euro (~$1310) smartphone from Huawei into an attractive proposition.

In our test, the 190-gram (~6.7 oz) Huawei P50 Pocket shows itself as a smartphone with high-quality workmanship, turning out comfortably compact with its foldable OLED panel.

With its foldable smartphone, the Chinese manufacturer focusses less on an aggressive price point to be able to compete with the foldables from Samsung, but instead, Huawei emphasizes the exclusive and fashionable design with its P50 Pocket. Our golden test unit in the Premium Edition was created in cooperation with the haute-couture designer Iris van Herpen. The regular version brings a conspicuous "3D micro sculpture design." In contrast to the Galaxy Z Flip3, the P50 Pocket doesn't leave a noticeable gap between the two display halves when it is closed up, but it also doesn't offer an IPX8 rating to protect from water getting inside.

Even though the P50 Pocket is a foldable, so the focus is rather on the folding mechanism of the panel, the Huawei smartphone surprises us with its good cameras on the back. We particularly like the pictures taken with the 40-MP main camera. The sharpness and dynamics are at a really high level. The same goes for the 13-MP ultrawide angle camera, which is able to reproduce many details. In this discipline, the foldable Chinese smartphone is even able to keep up with last year's flagship smartphones. Because of the foldable form factor, you can even take high-quality selfies with the main camera using the cover screen of the P50 Pocket.

Do you value a compact smartphone with a good photo quality for an Android smartphone and are looking for a premium smartphone? Then you can get a detailed impression of the Huawei P50 Pocket looking at our extensive review. However before a purchase, those who are interested in a foldable smartphone should consider that a P50 Pocket doesn't support Google Services or the 5G standard due to the US sanctions still remaining in place.

In addition, our review also reveals a large weakness of the Huawei P50 Pocket. Find out about it here …
