reMarkable Paper Pro: Brand new E-Ink tablet with an 11.8-inch color touchscreen and front light released at $579
Most E-ink displays have long been saddled with demerits of their own - most prominent of which being their lack of color support and unusability in poor lighting conditions. reMarkable's latest Paper Pro aims to turn the tables on these drawbacks by incorporating a touchscreen display that supports colors, as well as a front light.
The reMarkable Paper Pro boasts an 11.8-inch touchscreen based on the E Ink Gallery 3 panel with a resolution of 2160 x 1620, with support for colors as well as a front light as previously mentioned. Usage in proper lighting conditions will be perfect as is characteristic of E-ink displays, while the Paper Pro's front light will make usage perfectly satisfactory even after the sun goes down, unlike the reMarkable 2 (currently $449 on Amazon) which is unusable in the dark.
The Paper Pro's 5,030 mAh battery is likely more than sufficient enough, considering the lightweight internals and the minimalist OS, and should be good for almost 2 weeks of usage, according to reMarkable.
The 1.8 GHz quad-core SoC with Cortex-A53 cores should be more than adequate for the custom Linux-based reMarkable OS which, thankfully, is pretty light. The system also offers 2 GB of memory and 64 GB of flash storage - both of which should be sufficient for the vast majority of use cases for the Paper Pro. That being said, the Paper Pro in no way is capable enough to compete with full-fat Android tablets or iPads, owing to its minimalist OS with very limited functionality.
However, reMarkable has priced the Paper Pro at a premium, starting from $579 for the tablet with the Marker stylus. The Marker Plus stylus costs an additional $50, while the Book Folio and the Type Folio cost $89 and $299 respectively.
