IFA 2024 | TCL's NXTPAPER 14 won't match the Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra in performance, but it nearly matches it in size

TCL's newest Android tablet packs modest specs under the hood, but what it lacks in raw power, it makes up for in screen size. The screen isn't just massive, it has also got a trick that lets it mimic an E Ink e-reader.

Alongside announcing two new smartphones, TCL has also announced a new Android tablet called the NXTPAPER 14, and its massive screen size is one of its selling points. The NXTPAPER 14 features version 3.0 of TCL's signature brand of matte LCD panels that provide a paper-like experience.

That NXTPAPER 14's screen is a humongous one at 14.3 inches (2400 x 1600), just 0.3 inches smaller than that of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra (available on Amazon for $1084). The Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra is expected to have the same screen size as its predecessor.

The NXTPAPER 14's screen isn't just big; it has also got a few tricks. In addition to providing a paper-like experience and reducing glare, there's a button at the top of the device that allows users to switch between three different screen modes.

There's the default mode with all of the colors, and there's a Color Paper mode that mimics e-readers with a Kaleido display such as the Kobo Clara Colour (available on Amazon for $149). The third mode switches the display to a quasi-E Ink display. The NXTPAPER 14 can also automatically adjust the color temperature based on the time of the day and has support for TCL's T-Pen stylus, but sadly, the screen refreshes at 60Hz.

Inside the NXTPAPER 14 is a Helio G99 processor, one of the most common chipsets found in budget tablets. It is paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Surprisingly, there's no microSD card slot. Another surprise is that while the tablet has a single 8MP sensor with LED flash on the back, the front is home to a 13MP + 5MP dual camera setup.

The tablet also has an IP54 dust and water resistance rating, quad speakers, face unlock, WI-Fi 5, and Bluetooth 5.0. There's no audio jack though. The NXTPAPER 14 packs a 10,000mAh battery with support for 33W fast charging and it comes with a charger in the box. The tablet ships with Android 14 and has features such as floating windows. It can also serve as a second display (mirror mode or extended mode) when connected to a computer.

The TCL NXTPAPER 14 has a price tag of €399 and will be available in Europe, Africa, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and the Middle East.

If you don't like the NXTPAPER 14 because of its processor, there's the NXTPAPER 14 Pro which launched earlier this year with a Dimensity 8020 chipset, a larger 12,000mAh battery, but a slightly smaller 14-inch 120Hz display. It also has a higher price tag of $549.
