Samsung has brought its long-promised SmartThings update for Galaxy Watch4 and Galaxy Watch5 series models to Europe. To recap, the company announced the feature two months ago in January, as we reported at the time. Now, Samsung Germany has announced that the rollout of v1.1.0.8 has started in Europe. In short, the update expands the amount of smart home devices that can be controlled directly from the smartwatch rather than having to resort to a paired smartphone.
Specifically, the update adds control actions within the SmartThings tile, as well as the option of watching a video stream of a connected camera or a doorbell. It is possible to talk to people standing on the doorstep too, through the smartwatch's microphones and speakers, again negating the need to pick up a smartphone. Please note that a doorbell must support the WebRTC protocol for the Galaxy Watch4 or Galaxy Watch5 to be capable of using audio pass-through. Newer cameras from Nest and Ring support WebRTC, for example.
Moreover, SmartThings v1.1.0.8 also allows the Galaxy Watch4 and Galaxy Watch5 series to control air purifier fan speeds and thermostats. Similarly, smart blinds can be adjusted, whether that be fully opening and closing them or setting a desired level. Samsung adds that the two smartwatch series can start/stop a Galaxy SmartTag from beeping and can act as a remote control for certain own-brand Smart TVs. Please see Samsung's press release for more details.
