Garmin has overhauled its Beta Program, which it last changes just under a year ago. Since May 2022, it has been possible for Garmin smartwatches to download and install beta updates automatically through the Garmin Connect Mobile (GCM) app, provided that they have been enrolled on the company's Beta Program. This only applied to beta updates; Garmin also distributed alpha updates manually.
Now, has expanded GMS eligibility to alpha updates. Confusingly, Garmin will refer to alpha updates as 'Early' or 'First' Beta updates, which downplays their nature as potentially less stable versions of beta updates. Garmin will not offer these alpha or early beta updates automatically though. Instead, alpha updates can be downloaded by tapping 'Check for Updates' within the main Settings menu.
If alpha updates are not your thing, then Garmin will continue to distribute beta updates automatically. Additionally, the company reports that it has revised its feedback system to match this change in Beta Program approach. From now on, the company will collect alpha and beta feedback using the same channel rather than distinct channels. Garmin has not confirmed when it will start releasing alpha and beta builds again, although we imagine it will within the next few weeks.
