The Xiaomi Smart Home Display 8 Gimbal Edition has officially launched in its domestic market of China for around US$100, joining the company’s growing lineup of smart home displays. Even though Xiaomi offers an expansive range of smart home solutions internationally, there is no guarantee that the product will see a global release in its current form.
One standout feature of the Smart Home Display 8 Gimbal Edition is undoubtedly its camera. Rather than being fixed within the enclosure, the camera is perched on top of the device, enabling it to rotate 360° for a comprehensive view of its surroundings. However, this design does come with a limitation: it can't monitor an entire room simultaneously. The camera can also tilt slightly for more adjustability. According to official specs, the sensor boasts a resolution of 5 MP, which is fundamentally sufficient to deliver sharp images – not just during the day. At night, the device can utilise its 940 nm infrared light to illuminate objects up to 10 m (approx. 33 ft) away.
The display itself measures 8 inches diagonally and can present a wide range of (hopefully) relevant information. Other advertised features include AI integration, voice command support, Bluetooth 5.2, and compatibility with Xiaomi Mesh 2.0.
