Xbox controller inputs are unreliable after firmware update, but it's not stick drift
Whenever random movements with an Xbox controller occur, gamers are quick to blame stick drift. These sticks have mechanisms that wear down over time, which is not an issue with controllers using Hall effect technology. However, in this instance, it appears a recent firmware update is to blame. For several weeks, many Xbox controllers have exhibited unintended inputs.
Most complaints on Reddit describe random directional movements with both analog sticks. Gamers have noticed strange behavior when aiming in shooter games or navigating menus. In other cases, Xbox controllers are randomly disconnecting or have malfunctioning buttons.
While most Microsoft responses have not been helpful, one agent provided valuable insight. A representative confirmed unintended inputs began after the Xbox controller firmware update 5.23.5.0. As part of the early February update, the virtual dead zone is supposed to activate just before a stick returns to its center position. Unfortunately, it's not functioning correctly, causing erratic behavior with the Xbox controller.
Most Xbox gamers on consoles and PCs have no recourse except to wait for a fix. Changing the available dead zone settings doesn't impact the new virtual enhancements. Also, it's unknown why the firmware update would cause disconnects and strange responses from face buttons. An enterprising gamer did share a way to roll back the Xbox Elite Series 2 controller's firmware. However, this doesn't apply to the stock Series X|S peripheral.
As gamers have pointed out, it's unlikely that stick drift would suddenly affect so many controllers. Not every controller suffers from the issue, but the complaints are piling up.
