Verdict on the Asus ROG Zephyrus G16: Powerful, but still slower than its smaller G14 sibling

We've now reviewed both the ROG Zephyrus G16 and the smaller G14 with the new GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU. Despite a slightly higher TGP, the Intel Core Ultra 9 285H lags behind the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 in gaming performance.

We recently had the opportunity to review both the ROG Zephyrus G16 and the smaller ROG Zephyrus G14, both also housing the latest GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU. The larger G16 offers more powerful cooling, which is why the power consumption of the processor and graphics card is slightly higher. This brings us to the only real difference between the two models: While the larger G16 features the Intel Core Ultra 9 285H, the smaller G14 houses the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370.

We tested both systems in Turbo mode in order to extract maximum performance. While the G16's Intel processor consumes slightly more power under short-term load, both systems consume 80 watts under sustained load. The GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU, on the other hand, can consume up to 120 watts in the G16 and up to 110 watts in the G14, which should be an advantage for the G16. Both systems had the Nvidia driver 576.52 installed.

However, this does not reflect in the benchmarks, as the smaller G14 is either just ahead of the G16 in the synthetic tests or the two models are on par. The differences become more apparent in the actual gaming benchmarks. In 1080p resolution, the G14 has a 5% lead on average and even 7% in QHD resolution. The AMD processor appears to make a huge difference, especially in Call of Duty; we checked the values several times here, but the results remained constant and reproducible within 1-2 FPS. The Intel model only has an advantage in the older Final Fantasy XV benchmark.
