The VAVA Portable SSD Touch is a new product launched via Indiegogo recently. It is a stick-like drive with a hardware-based fingerprint scanner on the top of its aluminium, supposedly shock-proof casing. It also apparently packs AES 256-bit encryption on top of that and USB 3.1 Gen 2 speeds into its compact form-factor.

VAVA has launched its take on the portable SSD via the medium of Indiegogo. As it is intended to be locked using a fingerprint sensor, the brand claims that it is the most secure product within its category on the market. This feature, rated to store and recognize up to 10 prints, is augmented with password protection and AES 256-bit encryption.

The Portable SSD Touch has a USB type C port, and will apparently work with both type C to C and type C to A cables. It is described as USB 3.1 Gen 2, which means it may achieve write speeds of up to 480 megabytes (MB/s) per second and read speeds of up to 540 MB/s.

The internals that may deliver these specs are encased in an aluminium chassis measuring 3.94 x 1.18 x 0.35 inches. VAVA claims that it will withstand shocks and drops from up to 4 feet (1.2 meters). But what about data integrity in the presence of heat?

The brand indicates that the device will rely on its case - the bottom of which also has zinc alloy in its construction - for heat dissipation and needs nothing else. Reviews and user experience may test that assertion.

In addition, VAVA never mentions exactly what kind of SSD storage is housed within. The Portable SSD Touch has now exceeded its original US$15,000 Indiegogo goal by about 994% (correct at time of writing). It has 500GB, 1TB and 2TB SKUs in cobalt blue or space gray, which currently start at $79 on their new platform.
