Two new Casio A159WEV watches with Japanese wave designs on the way

Casio’s long-running A159 line is getting a small visual update, as per Casioblog. Two new variants have appeared ahead of an expected April reveal. The A159WEVJ-2 and A159WEVJ-7 come with the familiar rectangular digital format, and feature patterned dials inspired by traditional Japanese Seigaiha wave motifs.
The change is mostly cosmetic, but it’s definitely noticeable. The blue version uses a deep indigo tone with repeating wave arcs across the dial, while the grey model applies the same pattern in a more muted finish. Both seem to use a combination of printed texture and vapor deposition, leading to a slight reflective effect that shifts under light rather than a flat graphic.

Core specifications should be unchanged from the standard A159 formula. The case measures roughly 36.8 × 33.2 × 8.5 mm, with a lightweight resin case and stainless steel bracelet. Functions include a daily alarm, hourly time signal, stopwatch, auto calendar, and 12/24-hour formats. There’s LED backlighting, a quoted battery life of up to seven years, and water resistance rated at 30 meters. The use of acrylic glass continues, which keeps costs down but also means that this isn’t meant to be an upgrade in the technical sense.
One small detail that's special is the engraved caseback, reportedly featuring "Casio" in katakana, which ties back to the cultural theme of the dial. Packaging also appears customized, with a blue wave pattern carried over to the box design.
Pricing is expected to land around $100 - higher than typical A159 variants, but it's mostly because of the design work and potentially limited availability rather than any functional upgrade. If you're someone who already likes the A159 form factor, the new dials give you a unique look without changing how the watch behaves day to day.
