The Lenovo ThinkPad T480 was the end of an era. When this business laptop came out in 2018, nobody knew that it would be the last ThinkPad with an external, hot-swappable and expandable battery. With 2019's ThinkPad T490, Lenovo switched their mainstream ThinkPad business laptops over to internal batteries, which have since become the absolute norm in almost all laptops. A loss of a feature that many dedicated fans of the brands have mourned, as the external battery was a unique selling point of the series before.
We are in the year 2026 as of this article, and there may be hope yet that this feature could return.
With the recent announcement of the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 7, Lenovo did not bring back external batteries. However, the internal battery design has moved to a much more user-replaceable version, as it is no longer held by screws internally, enabling users to take it out with the push of a button. Still, it is an internal battery, inside the chassis, which means that you first have to remove the bottom cover before you can get to it - which, of course, is held by screws.
Still, the direction of the development is promising - and it seems Lenovo is not done yet thinking about this feature. As revealed in our recent, exclusive interview with Lenovo ThinkPad product manager Christoph Blindenbacher, Lenovo is still looking back at old models, like the T480. While there is no guarantee that the feature will return, this is the strongest indication yet that external batteries may get a celebrated comeback in the future after all.
