The Honor Robot Phone recently launched as the most expensive flagship smartphone with a professional gimbal camera in China.
There is only direction for flagship camera phones these days: up. The price range for these ever-improving, versatile, pocket-sized cameras has now officially expanded to include a new price tier. Honor is charging 10,000 yuan for the base model of the Robot Phone, which is about 33 percent more than the Vivo X300 Ultra cost just a few months ago.

For nearly a year, Honor has been hyping up the Robot Phone, and now it finally fully launched. As expected, this unusual smartphone with its small gimbal camera is initially only available in China, even though there was a “global launch” on YouTube—albeit in Chinese without subtitles or translation.

The fact that Honor plans to launch the Robot Phone outside China in the future is evident from the global product page, however the detailed specs can only be found on the Chinese product page until now. Since Honor had already revealed many details about the Robot Phone in the past, for instance many of the camera technologies, the most exciting part of the August 12 presentation in China was likely the final price tag for Honor’s new flagship device.

25% more expensive than the Oppo Find X9 Ultra in China

At 10,000 yuan (1,285 euros US$1,480), Honor is the first Chinese Android OEM to dare touch the infamous 10K threshold with a slab phone, which until now had been reserved for the most expensive Apple smartphones and foldables. Instead you can also get the Robot Phone now, with 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage. Those who want the more expensive version with 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage will have to shell out 13,000 yuan (1,670 euros US$ 1,930). By comparison: The Vivo X300 Ultra with comparable storage (12/512) costs 7,500 yuan in China, while the Oppo Find X9 Ultra reached 8,000 yuan. Honor is thus charging 25 to 33 percent more than the most expensive Ultras from a few months ago. It’s easy to imagine how high the future global Robot Phone will climb up the price ladder in international markets, given that the Vivo X300 Ultra with 1 TB of storage already costs 2,000 euros (US$ 2,300) in Europe at the moment.

The official Honor Robot Phone specs

The new Honor flagship is available in dark gray or silver. Weighing 248 grams and measuring 9.59 mm thick, it is not only as expensive but also as heavy and thick as a foldable phone. The 6.31-inch OLED display, with a peak brightness of up to 6,800 nits, offers a resolution of 2,640 x 1,216 pixels. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 hidden inside makes it a true flagship. In addition to the 200-megapixel 1/1.28-inch OIS main camera with f/1.6 aperture mounted on the retractable 3-axis gimbal, Honor has also included a 50-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with an f/2.0 aperture and a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto camera based on a 1/1.4-inch sensor with OIS, 2.7x zoom, and an f/2.6 aperture. Honor supports up to 200x digital zoom on this phone, to the best of our knowledge, more than any other device.

Arri LogC3 Video Recording and 4K120

In addition to many new technologies related to the mini 3-axis gimbal, the partnership with Arri also promises more professional video recordings in Arri's LogC3 format, true gimbal stabilization, a classic film look in an 2.39:1 aspect ratio and various gimbal modes such as FPV mode or Pitch Lock. Professionals can edit the footage directly in DaVinci Resolve. Some of the imaging functions are handled by Honor's first H1 ISP chip.

Battery specs and availability in China

In terms of battery capacity, the Honor offers respectable 7,060 mAh capacity. This seems to apply to the global model already. Charging is supported at 120 watts or 50 watts wirelessly. Various AI features are designed to assist users with filming and their gimbal photography. While the Robot Phone has been available for pre-order in China for some time now and will begin shipping on September 4, Honor is still keeping details about the global launch date and availability under wraps.
