Hot camera and not dustproof: Honor Robot Phone durability test and teardown

For the foreseeable future, the first smartphone with an integrated 3-axis gimbal has to be imported from China, and it remains to be seen whether Honor will ever officially offer the Robot Phone in Europe or other international markets. Interestingly however, it has already made its way to the US, where YouTuber Zack Nelson recently put it through extensive testing procedure before taking it apart.
As the only smartphone with a micro gimbal built into its body, it has to undergo several new tests. While the camera arm does prove quite forgiving when the motors are blocked while moving, it tends to get very hot in the process. Temperatures of around 50 degrees Celsius or 125 Fahrenheit for the robotic arm are apparently not uncommon, but should not cause any problems in day to day use. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about dirty environments.
IP54 instead of IP68
Nowadays, conventional bar-style smartphones are generally dustproof and waterproof according to an IP68 rating or higher, but Robot Phone users need to be more careful at the beach or in other environments where dirt can come in contact with the gimbal. The moving arm was effectively disabled after exposure to dirt, even compressed air didn't help. The Robot Phone is not waterproof either, so appropriate caution in everyday use is strongly recommended. At least there is no cause for concern in terms of stability: the bend test revealed no underlying stability issues.
A look inside
From 7:45 onwards, the JerryRigEverything video provides a look inside the unusual camera flagship. The back turns out to be a plastic cover, while the battery is comparatively easy to access, although it is glued in place. Due to the mechanical components, Honor uses several unusual design features inside the Robot Phone, including braided wires. Anyone who has always wanted to see what the inside of the micro gimbal looks like has definitely come to the right place.
