Arri’s flagship camera to feature a square sensor and 3-degree stabilization
What Zeiss is to Vivo, Hasselblad to Oppo, and Leica to Xiaomi, Arri is destined to bring to Honor in the near future: fame and better camera quality. It remains to be seen whether this strategy will pay off for the former Huawei brand. With the Robot Phone, Honor has made an impressive—albeit, for many, likely irrelevant—entry into the top tier of camera flagships, especially since the unusual gimbal phone didn’t exactly come cheap.
The real test begins with the Magic 9 smartphone generation this months, which is expected to inherit many of the Robot Phone’s innovations—including the Arri features—and will also receive a complete camera redesign. We don’t yet know when the Honor Magic 9 series will come to international markets like Europe, but in China, it’s set to launch practically head to head with the Xiaomi 18 Pro generation. The launch is expected shortly after the September 22 debut of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6.
On Weibo, the well-known leaker Digital Chat Station has once again commented on the expected camera specs and revealed a new feature. According to the leak, at least the top model in the Magic 9 series will feature a square front-facing camera similar to the Apple Center Stage camera on the iPhone 17, allowing users to take both portrait and landscape selfies and videos without having to rotate the phone 90 degrees in between.
3-degree OIS similar to the Vivo X500 Pro Max and three models
The rest of the camera setup also looks quite exciting, as has been reported on various occasions in the past. In addition to a 200-megapixel 1/1.28-inch main camera with an f/1.57 aperture and 3-degree OIS—similar to the Vivo X500 Pro Max main camera— Honor is also said to offer a second 200-megapixel 1/1.4-inch sensor with an f/2.6 aperture for the telephoto. The ultra-wide-angle camera will likely remains a 50-megapixel sensor though. According to certifications of the Magic9 series, up to three models are expected, including a more compact 6.36-inch version with a 3nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, as well as two 6.8-inch high-end models—one with a 2nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and one that may even feature active cooling, as Digital Chat Station recently hinted on Weibo.
