Dell is finally shipping its first laptop with Kaby Lake-G and initial impressions are promising. We've been able to show that even the entry-level XPS 15 9575 convertible with the Intel Core i5-8305G and AMD Radeon RX Vega M GL can go toe-to-toe with the Core i7-7700HQ and Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050, respectively, while being generally more power efficient. Perhaps coincidentally, the i7-7700HQ CPU and GTX 1050 GPU are also the highest configurable options available on the current XPS 15 9560 series. XPS 15 9575 owners are essentially getting the raw processing and graphics performance of the top-of-the-line XPS 15 9560 even at the bottom-line base configuration level.
The XPS 15 9560 can be configured with the Core i3-7100H, i5-7300HQ, or i7-7700HQ while the XPS 15 9575 can be configured with the Core i5-8305G or i7-8705G. Our comparison benchmarks below show that the slowest CPU option for the XPS 15 9575 is only about 7 percent behind the i7-7700HQ during multi-threaded workloads while being much faster than the dual-core i3-7100H and quad-core i5-7300HQ. The presence of Hyper-Threading on the quad-core i5-8305G is a big reason why the Kaby Lake-G processor can outclass the i5-7300HQ by such a large margin even though their base clock rates are only 300 MHz apart (2.5 GHz vs. 2.8 GHz).

As for graphics, the discrete Radeon RX Vega M GL GPU in the i5-8305G is roughly comparable to the GTX 1050 in 3DMark benchmarks if not slightly faster. Intel's official reveal of the Vega M GL included a slide claiming that the AMD GPU would be on par with the GTX 1050 and 1050 Ti and so it's encouraging to see the same here. The GTX 1050 is the highest GPU option available for the XPS 15 9560 and the Vega M GL can already top it. All current SKUs of the XPS 15 9575 have the same Vega M GL GPU even if the processor may be different since the faster Vega M GH is reserved for 100 W CPUs.
Real-world gaming performance, however, is a different story. AMD cards are known to be less optimized than Nvidia cards and the unique intricacies of Kaby Lake-G may prove to be a hindrance in the long run. The Integrated HD Graphics 630 GPU in the i5-8305G SoC is always active alongside the Vega M GL and games such as Destiny 2 and Middle-earth: Shadow of War may have resolution scaling issues as a result. Other titles like Dirt 4 and Final Fantasy XV run abnormally slow even when set to very low graphical settings. It's clear that further optimization will be needed before Kaby Lake-G GPUs can become as reliable as its Nvidia equivalent.

We recommend checking out our review on the XPS 15 9575 i5-8305G for more information and our overall take on the convertible. It's inevitable that we will revisit higher-end SKUs of the XPS 15 9575 with the Core i7-8705G SoC in the near future due to the popularity of the XPS series and our curiosity for Intel's seemingly tangential Kaby Lake-G platform.
