The 5491 and 5591 will target power users who need more performance than what Intel's U-Series of CPUs can offer. Both models will cram in 45 W Coffee Lake-H processors into a chassis design originally meant for 15 W Kaby Lake-R CPUs. The 5491 now also gains the TrackPoint nub that the 5490 omits, but nearly everything else remains the same.

Dell will be packing more performance into its Latitude series now that Intel's 8th gen Coffee Lake-H CPUs are available. The newly announced 14-inch Latitude 5491 and 15.6-inch Latitude 5591 will launch next month to complement the existing Latitude 5490 and Latitude 5590.

"Complement" is the key word here as the 5491 and 5591 are not successors to the current lineup. Both models utilize the same chassis as before but with new internal options including touchscreen support, GeForce MX130 GPU, and Intel 8th gen Coffee Lake-H CPUs up to the hexa-core Core i7. The processor update is significant as the 5490 and 5590 are limited to 15 W Intel 8th gen U-Series CPUs with integrated graphics and so the jump to an entirely brand new class of processors and discrete graphics should give users a massive boost in raw performance.

Beyond the above differences, users can expect the same experience with the 5491 and 5591 compared to the 5490 and 5590. Both systems are a bit heavier this time around at 1.65 kg and 1.97 kg, respectively, compared to 1.60 kg and 1.88 kg on the current models due to the more powerful internal hardware. It will be interesting to see how battery life and thermals are affected as the jump in processor performance will also demand more out of the system in terms of cooling and power.

The Latitude 5491 and 5591 will retail at $900 and $1000, respectively, when they become available on May 17.

After graduating with a B.S. in environmental hydrodynamics from the University of California, I studied reactor physics to become licensed by the U.S. NRC to operate nuclear reactors. There's a striking level of appreciation you gain for everyday consumer electronics after working with modern nuclear reactivity systems astonishingly powered by computers from the 80s. When I'm not managing day-to-day activities and US review articles on Notebookcheck, you can catch me following the eSports scene and the latest gaming news.
