After a minor delay, Naughty Dog finally released The Last of Us 2 on June 19, as a direct sequel to the award-winning The Last of Us that debuted on the PlayStation 3 and was subsequently remastered for the PS4. Apparently, the game is doing some serious numbers.
According to Eurogamer, The Last of Us 2 sold a shocking four million copies over its first weekend on the market. The game was released on a Friday, so we take that to mean three days: Friday, Saturday, Sunday. That number is impressive, as it makes the Naughty Dog game the fastest-selling PlayStation exclusive of all time.
God of War sold 3.1 million copies over the same period back in 2018, and Spiderman took the record later that year with 3.3 million copies. This record may ultimately belong to The Last of Us 2, as the only other high-profile PlayStation 4 exclusive on the cards is Ghost of Tsushima—which lacks an established fanbase.
The Last of Us 2's release has been plagued with a number of issues, most notable being an extensive leak weeks ago. The game also seems to have rubbed a majority of players the wrong way but that hasn't been of any consequence sales-wise, if these numbers are anything to go by.
