The Best Convertible Notebooks (2-in-1 Laptops)

Q3/2021 update. Convertible laptops feature a special hinge that allows them to be used as both notebook and tablet. As a result, these laptops are incredibly versatile and cover a very wide array of use cases, from personal use on the couch or in the backyard to educational use to professional use where convertibles are often used and well-suited for presentations. Find the best convertables reviewed by us below.

Convertibles, also known as two-in-one or multi-mode PCs, are hybrids that can be used as a tablet or a laptop. There are many different types: docking tablets with a keyboard base, slider solutions over a fixed keyboard unit or clamshell chassis with a 360-degree hinge. The following list contains notebook convertibles and 2-in-1 notebook convertibles, aka conventional notebooks with a special hinge that allows a 360 degree rotation of the display in order to be used in tablet mode. Windows tablets with extra keyboard or convertible notebooks with detachable display can now be found in a separate top 10 list here.

Editors' Comments

Convertibles combine the advantages of a tablet and a conventional laptop. There are numerous devices following this concept. The most important feature is a bright, and matte display to work without any limitations, even in challenging environments. The general system performance benefits significantly from Intel's modern SoCs, but the rather compact construction of these systems also suffer from thermal issues quite often. Modern Core i CPUs often throttle dramatically after 5 - 20 seconds. We cover this aspects comprehensively in every individual review. SSDs are pretty much standard; they are not just fast, but the modules are also very compact, which means there is more room for the battery.

1st – Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga G6

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga G6
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga G6

Lenovo’s ThinkPad X1 Yoga G6 received a major update, and its 16:10 display is what many users are looking for right now. It comes with a Tiger Lake SoC, which offers not only a powerful and modern CPU but also a fast Intel Iris Xe iGPU. Its 14-inch display supports stylus input for ultimate creativity. The included stylus can be stored inside the case. All things considered the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga G6 is a great convertible for productivity. It offers modern connectivity and long battery life. On the flip side, its keyboard is worse than it used to be.

The ThinkPad X1 Yoga G6 is a high-quality premium convertible with great 16:10 display.

Availability is somewhat limited right now. Prices start at $1,400 for the base model, and the device can be purchased through Lenovo’s own webstore.

2nd – Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Yoga G2

Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Yoga G2
Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Yoga G2

The Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Yoga G2 offers a fast Tiger Lake CPU and sits in Lenovo’s mid-range line-up. Its input devices remain excellent and very well suited for avid typists. In our review, the 13.3-inch convertible offered very good system performance, a high-quality case made of premium materials, fast Wi-Fi, and an easy-to-store ActivePen Pro stylus.

All things considered Lenovo’s ThinkPad X13 Yoga G2 performed as expected. Great craftsmanship and choice of material meet good input devices.

Prices start at $1,300, and all SKUs are available for next business day shipping according to Lenovo. The device can be purchased among others through Lenovo’s own webstore.

3rd – HP EliteBook Dragonfly Max

HP EliteBook Dragonfly Max
HP EliteBook Dragonfly Max

HP’s EliteBook Dragonfly Max is a lightweight business convertible equipped with Intel’s Core i7-1185G7, 16 GB of RAM, a 512 GB SSD, and a 13.3-inch touch display with support for stylus input. Its panel offers a decent contrast ratio and usable color gamut, and one of the device’s major strengths is its long battery life. It also comes with Wi-Fi 6, LTE, and various security features.

HP’s EliteBook Dragonfly Max is a very good business convertible with minor flaws that are easy to ignore.

Prices start at $2,300, and the device is currently only available through HP’s own website.

4th – HP EliteBook x360 1040 G7

Das HP EliteBook x360 1040 G7
Das HP EliteBook x360 1040 G7

The HP EliteBook x360 1040 G7 left an excellent impression in our review and achieved a very high overall rating. The 14-inch convertible thus deserves its spot at the top of our top 10 list. It is powered by an Intel Core i7-10810U, 16 GB of RAM, and a spacious 512 GB SSD.

The HP EliteBook x360 1040 G7 is aimed not just at business users on the go but also home users looking for a new Ultrabook. The most affordable low-end SKU already offers everything one might need in a convertible. If you are fine with Core i5 performance, you might be able to save another couple of hundred dollars. As with previous generations the system is incapable of fully utilizing a Core i7’s full performance potential.

In return, it offers very long battery life and thus utmost versatility and flexibility and should easily last all day long without requiring a recharge.

The HP EliteBook x360 1040 G7 is a very good convertible for business purposes. If, however, you are looking for a gaming-capable device you might want to turn your attention to units with dedicated GPUs.

The device is fairly expensive, in part due to poor availability. Retail prices for unavailable SKUs start at around $1,800 while one available SKUs is listed on Amazon for over $2,000.

5th - HP Spectre x360 14t

HP Spectre x360 14t
HP Spectre x360 14t

The HP Spectre x360 14t (see review here) is a well-made convertible that easily managed to secure a spot in our top 10 list. Its case and build quality are without a doubt state-of-the-art, and its display with its almost 100% sRGB color-space coverage a pleasure to look at. However, it could have benefited from a better OEM pre-calibration.

Other benefits include a comfortable keyboard, a well-made touchpad, USB Type-A and last but not least Thunderbolt 4 including Power Delivery and DisplayPort. A microSD card reader is also available.

If you don’t expect too much and are looking for a brand-new notebook for home use the HP Spectre x360 14t will make a great companion.

The price may not be justified by its performance metrics alone. However, its build quality and top modern design more than make up for it.

We do have to criticize HP for its performance, though. Despite great components the laptop was rendered incapable of fully utilizing their full potential. Its CPU is based on Intel’s latest Tiger Lake generation, including a top-of-the-line Intel Xe Graphics GPU with 96 EUs. That said even casual gamers will find the GPU’s gaming performance to be lacking.

6th - Dell Latitude 9510

Dell's Latitude 9510 with very long battery life
Dell's Latitude 9510 with very long battery life

The Latitude 9510 (see review here) is a high-quality 2-in-1 convertible equipped with an Intel Core i7-10810U, 16 GB of RAM, and a 512 GB SSD.

In our review, the device had issues fully utilizing its i7’s performance potential and was incapable of maintaining high turbo boost speeds for long periods of time due to thermal limitations.

We liked the Latitude 9510’s great build quality, which includes Dell’s choice of material. That said the device is slightly heavier than most of its competitors due to its aluminum case. Its input devices felt comfortable and of high quality and should satisfy avid typists.

The Dell Latitude 9510 is a premium 2-in-1 notebook made for office use and hobbyists.

The display featured accurate colors and a high level of contrast. In return, its brightness was lower than expected, which negatively impacted outdoor use. Other benefits include long battery life, great speakers, and a most quiet mode of operation.

Overall our review unit scored 89 % and rightly deserves our Top Rated award.

7th – Dell Latitude 9410

Dell Latitude 9410 with great battery life
Dell Latitude 9410 with great battery life

Dell’s Latitude 9410 2-in-1 (see review here) is a minor improvement of its already very good predecessor, the Latitude 7400 2-in-1. However, some limitations and drawbacks still apply due to their innate similarities, such as for example the lack of dedicated GPU options or the fact that a Ryzen option remains unavailable. Dell missed its change to have their cake and eat it too. After all, Renoir APUs come with a powerful gaming-capable iGPU.

Despite the fact that the Dell Latitude 9410 2-in-1 does not feature the brightest display it still remains one of the best currently available 14-inch office convertibles.

The device is slightly heavier than other 14-inch convertibles. Its superb build quality and well-thought-out choice of material leave a great haptic feedback befitting of its price range. The Latitude 9410 2-in-1 was very energy efficient and ran for a very long time in our standardized Wi-Fi battery test. Road warriors dependent on long battery life should definitely take a closer look at it.

8th – Acer Spin 5 SP513

Acer Spin 5 SP513 with barely any downsides
Acer Spin 5 SP513 with barely any downsides

One of the Acer Spin 5’s (see review here) most important benefits is its great price-performance ratio. Overall, the device managed to secure top or very good spots in many categories resulting in an overall very good rating. Performance is solid thanks to Ice Lake albeit sustained load resulted in thermal throttling. That said the device remained cool and quiet under regular everyday load. Build quality and choice of material are excellent. The aluminum case is robust but also significantly deeper than most of its competitors.

The Spin 5 SP513 is a well-made addition to Acer’s line-up. Our only real gripe was the PWM controller regulating the display’s brightness.

Avid typists will find the keyboard to be acceptable, and creatives will benefit from the convertible’s included stylus. The display was solid albeit users sensitive to PWM should probably look for alternatives. Our review sample’s PWM frequency was comparatively low, which might cause issues for sensitive users.

9th - Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Yoga

Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Yoga
Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Yoga

Lenovo’s ThinkPad X13 Yoga (see review here) is made of premium high-quality material that not only feels great but also looks fantastic. A ThinkPad’s build quality is traditionally already at a very high level, and the ThinkPad X13 Yoga offers the same pros and cons as the Lenovo ThinkPad X390 Yoga, both of which are based on the same platform.

On the inside we find an Intel Core i7-10510U that managed to maintain its high level of performance even under sustained load as we found no fluctuations and accordingly no decrease in performance.

Lenovo’s ThinkPad X13 Yoga is not only visually very similar to the ThinkPad X390 Yoga but also offers an overall comparable level of performance.

The ThinkPad X13 Yoga’s main strengths are its plentiful connectivity, including Wi-Fi 6 for improved wireless transfer speeds, its keyboard, its trackpoint, and also its high-quality touchpad.

10th – Lenovo Yoga 9i 14

Das Lenovo Yoga 9i 14 ITL 4K
Das Lenovo Yoga 9i 14 ITL 4K

Despite its good overall rating in our review the Lenovo Yoga 9i 14 barely made this top 10 list. It is based on Intel’s new Intel Core i7-1185G7 Tiger Lake quad-core CPU with an Iris Xe iGPU that is significantly faster than previous generations. Nevertheless, you should keep your expectations in check as it is roughly comparable to an Nvidia GeForce MX330. It comes with 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage. RAM is not upgradable but at least Lenovo cared enough to solder it onto the motherboard in a dual-channel configuration.

Overall, the Lenovo Yoga 9i ITL 4K is a powerful convertible with great display.

Rather uncommon for Lenovo are its comparatively poor input devices. In addition, the Core i7 CPU performed worse under sustained load than the i5-1135G7. We suspect that the device’s cooling capabilities have simply met their master in the i7 CPU as becomes obvious when listening to the screaming fans under load. Still, the device managed to make our top 10 list, which means that it performed well enough overall.

The Lenovo Yoga 9i starts at $880 but is currently unavailable at that price. The most affordable SKU listed in Lenovo’s own webstore costs slightly over $1,100.
