Chrono Trigger turns 30 today, and to celebrate, Square Enix may be revisiting the world of the beloved role-playing game.
In a tweet celebrating its 30th anniversary, Square Enix hinted that new games in the Chrono Trigger universe may be in its project pipeline:
To mark the 30th anniversary and to express our gratitude to everyone who has played Chrono Trigger so far, we are planning a variety of projects over the next year that will go beyond the world of the game. Please look forward to the latest information, which will be posted via the Square Enix official X and @ChronoTriggerPR accounts.
Keep in mind that there is no confirmation of new games at this point. In fact, the "variety of projects" may include non-game media, such as music, art, videos, or something else entirely. One such project is a livestream of music from Chrono Trigger. This event will stream on YouTube from March 14 at 10 PM EST until March 15 at 7 AM EST.
Chrono Trigger was released for the Super Famicom on March 11, 1995. It came to the Super Nintendo in North America 5 months later on August 11, 1995. Widely hailed as one of the best Japanese role-playing games (JRPGs) ever made, the game was developed in a joint effort between the then-separate titans of the RPG world, Square and Enix.
The team behind the game, known as the "Dream Team," included industry leaders Hironobu Sakaguchi (the lead producer and creator of the Final Fantasy series), Yuji Horii (the designer behind Dragon Quest), and Akira Toriyama (the creator of Dragon Ball and character designer for Dragon Quest).
Chrono Trigger received very positive scores from critics when it was released and is held in high regard by JRPG fans and retro gamers alike. It also remains a widely sought-after collectible in the retro gaming community, often fetching prices in excess of $200 for just a cartridge on sites like eBay. The game is also available on the PlayStation 1, Nintendo DS, Apple's App Store, the Google Play Store, and on PC via Steam.
