The gaming handheld market has exploded in recent years, in part thanks to the successes of the Asus ROG Ally and the Valve Steam Deck, among others. Initially, manufacturers initially launched devices with unusual form factors. However, the market has coalesced around the idea of a horizontal form factor with 7~8-inch displays for the most part, even for Android options.
A few left-field designs continue to bubble through though, one of which being Samsung Display's Flex Gaming foldable concept. Now, YouTube channel Nittrx has showcased a new concept that has a different take on the idea of a foldable gaming handheld. While the Flex Gaming leverages a foldable display, the unnamed device uses two hinges to protect its fixed display when it is not in use.
As a result, the concept almost inverts the idea of a clamshell gaming handheld like the Anbernic RG35XX SP (curr. $79.99 on Amazon), whose display is attached to its base by a hinge. By contrast, the gamepad buttons are hinged here. Incidentally, its design in its unfolded state resembles the Ayaneo Pocket Micro, albeit without its right-hand joystick. According to Nittrx, we may see this form factor at some stage. Unfortunately, it is unclear in what form for now, or when.
