Sonnet launches performance-focused eGPU enclosure with 850W PSU

Sonnet has made the Breakaway Box 850 T5 available for purchase, and at the core, it's a Thunderbolt 5 dock that brings support for a wide range of desktop GPUs. Precisely, the brand notes compatibility with triple-slot Nvidia RTX 50, 40, and 30 series. In terms of AMD graphics cards, there's support for Radeon RX 6000, 7000, and 9000 series models.

There's an 850W PSU, which means that the dock won't have any issues running something like the Nvidia RTX 5080 desktop GPU. Thanks to the 100W PD support, an additional power brick won't be required when connecting this eGPU dock with a laptop or mini PC.

On that note, in addition to the main connectivity port, there's another peripheral Thunderbolt 5 port and three USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports. These will make it easier to further expand the setup. It also has a 5GbE for a speedy wired network connection.

The dock is also backward compatible with systems that have Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 ports, but it would have been nice to see it include an OCuLink port as well. A M.2 slot for storage expansion would have made the Breakaway Box 850 T5 better compete with options like the Razer Core X V2 or Minisforum DEG2.

Speaking of which, the Sonnet Breakaway Box 850 T5 has a launch price of $599.99, making it relatively expensive. The Minisforum DEG2, on the other hand, offers better connectivity options and retails for $247. Even though Minisforum's eGPU dock doesn't come with a PSU, it offers better value, and Razer Core X V2, with a similar setup as Sonnet's offering, brings a sleeker chassis for $349.99 but doesn't come with a PSU either (modular MSI MAG A850GL 850W PSU curr. $109.99 on Amazon).
