The Sdkeboost is a new conversion kit that turns various regular bicycles into e-bikes. The system differs from other solutions in certain aspects and also complies with the legal speed limit for electric assistance in the EU.

Nowadays, highly affordable e-bikes are available for well under $1,000, though high-end models are unlikely to be found in this price range, particularly when it comes to their shifting systems and other components. Currently seeking backers through a crowdfunding campaign, the Sdkeboost is an upgrade kit designed to transform many regular bicycles into e-bikes. Its technology isn’t entirely new and is based on a relatively straightforward principle: The motor drives the rear wheel directly, requiring it to maintain grip on the tyre. This approach may also lead to considerably higher wear.

The Sdkeboost does come with certain limitations in practice. It can’t be installed on bikes with brakes that reach over their wheels. As a result, the kit supports bicycles with disc brakes but not those fitted with the fairly common V-brakes. The seat stay – which connects the seat tube to the dropouts – must also consist of two separate tubes, especially in the area above the tyre. This is because the unit mounts on the seat stay bridge using a backplate. An integrated mudguard is included with the device.

The company offers an EU version with a motor-assist limit of 25 km/h (around 20 mph). Although a cruise mode is available, this feature may not be legal in certain regions. According to official specifications, the system weighs 3.8 kg (8.4 lb), delivers 700 watts of power, and provides a range of up to 80 km (50 mi). Prices start at $339 for early backers, and shipping is expected to begin in April 2026. Potential buyers should carefully consider the inherent risk of such a crowdfunding project before committing to a purchase.
