Samsung's new camera upgrade will not improve image quality

Samsung will be launching the Galaxy S26 series next week. Currently, the company is expected to unveil the Galaxy S26, Galaxy S26 Plus and Galaxy S26 Ultra. Based on recent leaks, the Galaxy Buds 4 and Galaxy Buds 4 Pro will be gracing the company's next Galaxy Unpacked event too.
Currently, Samsung is promoting the Galaxy S26 series' camera prowess with an AI-generated video. Resorting to this kind of content suggests Samsung plans to bring little the table with the Galaxy S26 series. To that end, previous leaks and rumours indicate that the trio will bring across almost all the camera hardware from the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25 Plus and Galaxy S25 Ultra (curr. $725 - refurbished on Amazon).
According to Ice Universe, Samsung will equip the Galaxy S26 Ultra with a different front-facing camera from the ISOCELL 3LU (S5K3LU) found inside the Galaxy S25 Ultra. Writing on X, the leaker asserts that a new Sony sensor will underpin the front-facing camera hardware on this year's Ultra model. In a reply, Erencan Yilmaz elaborates that this could be the IMX874; Ice Universe has not revealed as much, though.
Regardless, the latter adds that this Sony sensor will output at 12 MP with a 1/3.2-inch optical format, an f/2.2 aperture, an 85 ° field of view and 1.12 um wide pixels. In short, these are all exact matches for the ISOCELL 3LU (S5K3LU) that has featured in the Galaxy S23 Ultra through Galaxy S25 Ultra. Thus, it seems that the Galaxy S26 Ultra will be unable to surpass the selfie image quality of its predecessors even with a newer sensor at the helm.
