Trailers of the upcoming movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, have shown the titular character using a Samsung foldable. Now, Samsung has released a new video advert that explains how that decision came to be.

Spider-Man a.k.a. Peter Parker is known for using Sony Xperia phones, at least according to the live-action adaptations, but for the upcoming movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the webslinger has switched to a Samsung smartphone, and not just any model, but a foldable.

Many may be wondering why Peter Parker switched to a Samsung phone, considering Sony owns the film rights to the Spider-Man franchise and is still in the smartphone business. While the simple reason is that this is simply product placement, and money exchanged hands between Samsung and Sony for this, Samsung has released an advert that “explains” the reason, and it is a clever one.

The ad, which is almost a minute long, shows Peter Parker owning a box full of broken phones that were damaged during battles with his enemies. To mitigate it, his AI system suggests a new smartphone, and proceeds to fabricate a new one for him, specifically the Galaxy Z Flip 8. It also fabricates a second smartphone, a Galaxy Z Fold 8, for communicating with Detective DeWolff, who is an NYPD detective that works with Spider-Man in the upcoming movie.

The ad also includes other Samsung products such as a Galaxy Watch Ultra on the wrist of Ned Leeds and another Samsung foldable. There's also a Samsung Galaxy taxi top on the roof of a yellow cab.

Overall, creating a backstory to Spider-Man ditching Xperia smartphones for Samsung foldables, is a nice ad. However, a rugged smartphone, such as the Galaxy XCover 7 Pro (curr. available on Amazon for $556.66), is a more sensible choice, as it has better durability than a foldable smartphone.

Although, since Samsung's new foldables feature the new Flex Titanium technology, which strengthens the foldable display, we can see why they are the devices Spider-Man uses. Also, if you are paying to put a product in a film, it makes sense to put your best one in it.
