Samsung adds titanium to Galaxy Z8 series display to tackle foldables' biggest issue: The crease

Samsung Display has introduced Flex Titanium, a new internal structure for foldable OLED panels the company says addresses the crease and durability issues that have followed the Galaxy Z Fold series since 2019. The technology combines two components: a titanium-alloy film that sits beneath the OLED panel, and a titanium plate that supports the display module from below.

As the Samsung Newsroom article hints, the technology should debut on the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 series, which we've covered in detail separately. Leaked US pricing points to the standard Z Fold 8 starting at $1,899 for 256GB, while the Z Fold 8 Ultra is tipped to start at $2,099, around $100 more than the Z Fold 7 at launch and Samsung's first foldable to break the $2,000 mark. European leaks suggest €1,999 and €2,199 respectively for the base 256GB configurations, and a leaked Harvey Norman presentation slide puts Australian pricing at AUD 2,699 for the Z Fold 8 and AUD 2,999 for the Ultra. None of these figures are confirmed, and final pricing is still under review.
Foldable phones have long struggled with a visible crease at the fold line, caused partly by the flexible film layers beneath the OLED panel deforming under repeated folding. Samsung's approach to date has relied largely on hinge geometry and softer under-panel materials rather than structural metal reinforcement, so Flex Titanium marks a shift in strategy if it holds up to real-world folding cycles once devices ship. Samsung says further details will be shared at Galaxy Unpacked on July 22 in London.
