Samsung announces 1,600-nit tandem OLED panels for next-gen laptops

Samsung Display has just begun mass-producing the industry's first mass-produced laptop OLED panels certified under VESA's new DisplayHDR True Black 1400 standard, with Lenovo, Asus, Dell and MSI already preparing laptops based on the technology. The new VESA certification requires roughly 40% more brightness than the previous certification, corresponding to around 1,400 nits peak brightness in a 10% window of the screen while maintaining perfect blacks. Samsung claims that its new panels can even reach peak brightness of up to 1,600 nits in a smaller window size.
 

This leap comes from a tandem OLED construction that stacks two light-emitting layers rather than one, boosting brightness and improving power efficiency without sacrificing image quality. In addition to boosting peak brightness, the new layout reportedly enables richer HDR visuals, greater color accuracy and longer panel lifespan.

Lenovo's Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition has already launched with the panel, while the other three brands are expected to follow with their own models later this year. Samsung's rival, LG Display, is reportedly pursuing similar tandem OLED technology for laptops.
