We loved the Galaxy Tab S2 since the very first time we got our hands on it back in August, and upon further investigation and after spending more time with it we just love it even more. It's a tablet well worth considering if you've been thinking about buying the iPad mini 4, as it can contend and sometimes outshine Apple's tablet when it comes to design and power. It's almost unbelievably thin and light and that screen is a joy to use. This tablet is about to make its way into the best tablet char, and it won't come quietly.

We're big fans of the Tab S2 8.0. It brings you all the great features of its bigger brother, but in a smaller, even lighter form design. If screen size matters, then the Tab S2 9.7 gives you a bigger picture. Nevertheless, the 8-inch model is great for reading books and magazines, playing games and watching movies while being just that little bit easier to brandish. For our money, this is the best of the small screen Android tablets and a really strong rival to the iPad Mini 4. If you’d rather go Android than iOS, this is the mini Android slate to buy.

There’s a lot to think about if you’re contemplating picking up the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8.0-inch. First and foremost, you’ll need to know it carries a $399.99 premium to pick up. While steep, it’s not all that surprising. For the price and all, you get an incredibly skinny and lightweight tablet filled with high-end specs and a better-than-average performance across the board.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 is a lightweight tablet that's a lightweight upgrade over last year's Galaxy Tab S. Andbeyond the thinner and lighter design, it can't keep up with the iPad Air 2. There's still plenty of reason to invest in this reading and web surfing-friendly tablet. Its size and shape is better suited for everything but video, and for some, that's a big plus.

There's an obsession among tablet makers with building the thinnest and lightest devices that each generation of technology allows. Samsung leads the way with its Galaxy Tab S2, a beautifully crafted slate with a gorgeous display, subtle accents, and a soft-touch backside. Measuring 5.6mm thick and weight only 265 grams, the 8" Galaxy Tab 2's dimensions are about more than bragging rights.

The Samsung is a great tablet, though, at any price. The most important aspect of any tablet is the screen, and here the Galaxy Tab S2 just knocks it clean out of the park. Everything from movies to games to animated GIFs look utterly stupendous – so good, in fact, that I regularly found myself picking up the Tab S2 in preference to my iPad mini 2. Yes, it’s bloody expensive, but it’s also refined, dainty and runs Android – and some people love that kind of thing. If that’s just what you’ve been looking for, you should probably go out and buy one.

If you're set on a compact Android tablet, there's no doubt the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 is the best there is. It certainly has a premium price, but it has a great screen and excellent battery life. It wins a Recommended award. However, if you're not tied to Android, I think the iPad Mini 4 has the edge. Apple's tablet may have worse battery life, but has similar screen quality and is significantly faster. If you're looking for something else entirely, our best tablets article can help.

With the Galaxy Tab S2, Samsung has upgraded its flagship tablet in almost every meaningful way. You get a more powerful processor, a display that remains one of the best on the market, and hardware that's lighter, thinner, and more beautiful than ever before, all for the same price as last year's model. If you're in the market for a smaller tablet, it should be at the top of your list.

We can’t give our final verdict until we get the Galaxy Tab 2 back to PC Advisor towers, and put it through its paces. However, based on our first impressions with the Tab S2 and previous knowledge of the original Tab S, we’re impressed. With regards to design, the Tab S2 wins – it’s incredibly thin and light, and the screen is gorgeous. However, at a discounted price, the original Tab S is also a bargain and could be a winner – we’ll have to wait on the pricing of the Tab S2 to be announced first!

This display size is a threshold between tablets and smartphones. Most tablets have larger screen diagonals but a lot of smartphones offer such a big screen.
Large display-sizes allow higher resolutions. So, details like letters are bigger. On the other hand, the power consumption is lower with small screen diagonals and the devices are smaller, more lightweight and cheaper.
