Samsung has introduced a new object tracker, nearly three years after it announced its first Galaxy SmartTag. Unsurprisingly, the second-generation device maintains Samsung's existing nomenclature. As such, Samsung markets the accessory as the Galaxy SmartTag2, mirroring the Galaxy Z Fold5, Galaxy Z Flip5 and the Galaxy Watch6 series.
In a press release, Samsung explains that the Galaxy SmartTag 2 combines Bluetooth and ultra-wideband (UWB) technologies like the Apple AirTag. By contrast, the original Galaxy SmartTag offered Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity; Samsung charged US$10 more for the Galaxy SmartTag+ that added UWB support. Hence, there is no need for a dedicated 'Plus' model this time around.
The Galaxy SmartTag 2 maintains its predecessor's 120-metre coverage via Bluetooth Low Energy 5.0 (BLE 5.0) too. Samsung has also redesigned the SmartTag, arguably making it resemble a security tag as a result. Nonetheless, the new design has a larger loop, which should make it easier to attach to items. However, it seems that Samsung has done away with the physical button that the original Galaxy SmartTag has.
Additionally, Samsung boasts that the Galaxy SmartTag 2 can last up to 700 days before its battery needs replacing, over 2.3 times as long as its predecessor. The new object tracker is IP67 certified too; please see Samsung's press release for more details. The Galaxy SmartTag 2 will be available from October 10 in the US for US$29.99 in black and white finishes. Samsung has not confirmed the device's release in other markets yet, though.
