Samsung is now said to launch next-gen flagship Android smartphones that go to whole new lengths for increased screen-on time. This might involve scaling batteries typically used in electric vehicles (EVs) down to those of a size usable in mobile devices for potentially improved specs. The OEM is said to partner with 2 Chinese companies in the industry for this purpose.

Many smartphone enthusiasts will have heard of the stacked motherboard; now, the stacked battery is reportedly coming to join it. The latter is so called because their main components (such as the anode, cathode and separator) are put together more like a sandwich, rather than wound up together prior to being placed in the traditional "pouch"-style housing as usual.

The first of those manufacturing techniques are linked to increased energy density, which is why Samsung's SDI division has reportedly partnered with 2 Chinese companies to make its "Gen 5" batteries stacked.

Those batteries are intended for EVs, in fact - however, they are apparently working out so well for Samsung that it is now said to scale them down for use in the devices that might come after the current Galaxy S23 flagship smartphones (or, possibly, the S24 series after that).

The resulting next-gen 'stacked smartphone battery' is tipped to launch with a density of 10% or more than that of its predecessor.
