Launched at CES 2024, the S8 Max V Ultra is the first robot vacuum with Matter support, an in-built voice assistant and a flexible arm. It also has an upgraded charging dock as well as a premium price worthy of Roborock's latest flagship.

Roborock's S8 offerings last year were absolute winners in the robovac category. But while our review gave the S8 a glowing recommendation, it didn't have an arm to mop hard-to-reach corners. This year's Roborock S8 Max V Ultra not only fixes that problem, it is also the first Matter-enabled robovac from the company.

Compared to the S8, the S8 Plus and the S8 Pro Ultra which all have 6000 Pa suction, the S8 Max V Ultra comes with a whopping 10000 Pa of suction power. Add on top of that an extra mopping brush that spins, a decent camera and a built-in voice assistant, it's not hard to see how Roborock's latest and greatest robovac literally out-specs every other robot vacuum in the market.

Yet this raises the question of whether such fancy features are worth the $1800 that Roborock is charging for the S8 Max V Ultra.

For a lot less than that, you can get any other vacuum from the S8 line, or one from the midrange Q series. For about half of that price tag, you can even get the latest Q Revo Pro that launches this April. In fact, for less than a third of that asking price, you could easily get a Shark Matrix robovac and its 45-day capacity charging dock.

Roborock's latest flagship is one expensive device, but given the avalanche of ultra-convenient features, it's not needlessly so: the charging dock offered attaches directly to your drainage system, which eliminates the need for a massive water tank. The dock also washes the mop at the base of the vacuum with hot water and dries it automatically with hot air.

Matter support means that you can theoretically use AI assistants such as Siri, Alexa or Google assistant to control the S8 Max V Ultra. That feature is nonexistent for now though, as most smart home ecosystems are yet to support Matter-enabled robot vacuums. However you can also rely on the built-in voice assistant called Rocky, which simply lets you speak directly to the robovac and it will do your bidding.

Like the S7 Max V Ultra, the S8 Max V Ultra has a camera and even supports video calling. Surprisingly, the camera has a reasonable use case: AI-powered object recognition. Granted, robovacs without a camera have fairly decent obstacle avoidance, but an actual camera should make it a lot better for the robot to make decisions to clean or not to clean. Privacy concerns are still valid though, so you might want to stick with a different S8 model(such as the S8 Pro Ultra) if cameras are a deal-breaker for you.

The S8 Max V Ultra will be available publicly in April on Amazon and Roborock's official website for $1800.
