Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves announced: Gen 10 begins on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027

During Pokémon’s 30th anniversary, the Pokémon Presents livestream finally revealed a new mainline entry in the franchise. According to The Pokémon Company, the next installment of Pokémon is called Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves, which marks the beginning of Generation 10.
These two new Pokémon games are being developed by Game Freak and are slated to launch globally exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2. This means we won't be getting Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves on the original Switch.
The announcement trailer featured an ocean backdrop with a beach house, where a knock at the door revealed two costumed Pikachu, suggesting that Pokémon customization and accessories will be a feature coming in 2027.
However, these two Pikachu are speculated not to be just for show in the reveal trailer; they are known as Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu and are expected to make a cameo or play a role in the Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves story. Plot details, however, are still under wraps.
The reveal trailer also confirmed three new starter Pokémon, presenting a fresh take on the Grass, Fire, and Water types. The Grass-type starter Pokémon is Browt, which looks like a small chick covered in fluffy yellow down and appears to be a playful nod to chickpeas.
Along with Browt, the Fire-type starter is a puppy Pokémon called Pombon. Pombon is covered in fluffy orange fur with a red tuft of hair on its head and chest. This starter seems to be another playful spin on the Pomeranian dog breed and a bonfire.
Rounding out the starter lineup is the Water-type Pokémon Gecqua, which is blue from head to toe, with a larger head and eyes compared to the rest of its body.
The new region has not yet been named by Game Freak, but the trailer gives a clear idea of what to expect in terms of Pokémon diversity, terrain, and biomes. According to the official description, “These new titles feature an open-world adventure with an open world to explore, with beautiful windswept islands and a vast ocean with glittering waves.”
The trailer showed an island with tropical forests teeming with Tropius and grasslands with Taillow flying overhead. It also featured a gigantic Wailord spouting water and a lava-bubbling volcanic area with Slugma.
This isn't the only upcoming release in the Pokémon universe, however, with Pokémon Pokopia slated to release next week, on the 5th of March as part of a growing concentration from Nintendo on one of its most successful franchises as it attempts to cater to the next generation of gamers.
