Reliable leaker hints new 3D Mario game exists, as fans await Switch 2 console seller

One debated topic among Nintendo fans is when the company will announce a new 3D Mario game. Super Mario Odyssey debuted in 2017, leaving Switch 2 owners without a follow-up since. Trusted leaker NateTheHate has addressed rumors, seemingly confirming knowledge of the project.

Responding to Hugo Gaming, who asked about the potential Switch 2 game, NateTheHate said, “Nothing I'm going to share at present.” When pressed, the insider wouldn’t share more insight. So far, he has avoided Nintendo’s wrath, despite correctly predicting the handheld’s reveal and numerous Direct showcases.

It’s possible that the leaker is referring to a 3D Mario game that has been cancelled or has a release date years away. Still, in January, he speculated that the title would be the “big holiday game” for 2026, while urging fans not to consider it a fact. Most recently, the March 10th Mario Day passed without any news, disappointing gamers again.

Nintendo's late 2026 plans are a mystery

After a strong start, Switch 2 sales have gradually tapered off. Nintendo stock has suffered, with one concern being the lack of system-sellers on the horizon. Former marketers at the company, Kit & Krysta, believe the famous plumber's return would reassure supporters.

The podcasters also cautioned that a premature release date reveal could further frustrate gamers. That may explain the silence. Another popular theory is that Nintendo will use the April 1st premiere of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie to begin promoting a new title. It already shipped a pair of remasters in October with a galactic theme, but the setting is ideal for further open-world exploration.

The success of Pokémon Pokopia has taken some pressure off the Japanese gaming giant. Selling 2.2 million copies in four days, it may have boosted sales of the handheld. Nintendo stock also rallied, recovering some of its previous losses. Nevertheless, a new 3D Mario Switch 2 game would give investors more confidence ahead of another crucial holiday period.
