The somewhat controversial camera experts at DxOMark have just published their Pixel 10 Pro XL camera review, and it concludes with a very good result and a top spot in their ranking of best smartphone cameras. Right behind the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra, Oppo Find X8 Ultra and Vivo X200 Ultra, Google captures the fourth place, ahead of Apple's iPhone 16 Pro Max.

When Apple unveils its flagship iPhone 17 Pro with the purportedly most powerful telephoto lens in a smartphone thus far, the ranking of the best camera flagships might change. But as of today, Google's brand-new camera flagship has overtaken the iPhone 16 Pro Max. The recently published DxOMark camera review of the Pixel 10 Pro XL is quite positive, although last year's Pixel 9 Pro even managed to secure second place, right behind the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra.

In 2025, it "only" managed to reach fourth place, which is still in the top 5 and right behind the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra, Oppo Find X8 Ultra and Vivo X200 Ultra. It might be surprising to some that the Pixel 10 Pro XL's ultrawide camera achieved the highest score in the video test with 145 points, even surpassing the X200 Ultra. Vivo’s flagship and its 1/1.28-inch sensor with 4K120 support should technically be of better than the Pixel 10 Pro, which is only the case in the photo category. In our opinion, it's not well explained why the Pixel 10 Pro ranks as the best smartphone in this category, but that wouldn't be the first time that DxOMark has to deal with some criticism in relation to its smartphone camera rankings.

The pros and cons of the Pixel 10 Pro XL camera according to DxOMark

The review praises the good exposure and dynamic range of photos and videos taken with the Pixel 10 Pro XL, noting it delivers accurate white balance and renders skin tones well. Compared to the competition, they found a low tendency for artifacts and a well-functioning autofocus. The high level of detail from the 5x telephoto lens was also positively mentioned.

There were relatively few downsides. However, Google could still improve its bokeh in portrait mode and medium-range zoom shots, which have a somewhat disappointing level of detail. Additionally, the camera reviewers noted some flare in outdoor shots, and low-light photos lack some detail compared to the competition. You can check out the full camera review here. Below are three comparison photos that have been published on X. They show how the Google Pixel 10 Pro XL holds up against its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
